This Week’s Highlights in Blue Devil Athletics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

The men’s and women’s track field track and field teams started their outdoor season this past weekend on a rather high note.  Their meet took place at University of Wisconsin- Lacrosse on Friday.  The men took home a fourth place finish while the girls took second.  On both teams, there were several key individuals that contributed to these successes.

For the boys, one specific individual stood out at this meet.  Nick Lubinski, junior from Hudson, WI, placed in three different events:  first place in triple jump, second place in the 4×100, and eighth in the javelin throw.  Along with Lubinski, Walker Olson, freshman from Chetek, WI, and Kevin Salveson, junior from Maple Lake, MN, placed in multiple events as well.  Olson placed second in the javelin and sixth in high jump while Salveson placed third in long jump and eighth in the 110-hurdles.  Several other athletes also earned top spots and were vital in overall team finish of fourth out of eleven teams.

For the girls, the top finishers for this meet included Laurisa Titterud, junior from Lino Lakes, MN, and Heidi Lieffort, freshman from Colfax, WI.  Both each earned first place in the 800 meter run and discus events respectively.  Second place finishes included Laura Mesenburg, senior from Byron, MN, in polevault, Lydia Meier, sophomore from Middleton, WI, in throws and the 4×100 meter relay team.  Megan Ward, senior from Eau Claire, WI, also had a big meet.  Aside from being a part of the second place 4×100 meter relay team, she placed fourth in both the javelin and high jump.  The women’s team took a solid second place finish while competing against ten other highly competitive teams.

The next upcoming meet for both women and men is at UW-Platteville on Saturday, April 11th.  Both the baseball and softball team will be hosting games on April 8th.  The women will be taking on local rivals, UW-Eau Claire at 4 and 6 pm, while the men will be playing against UW- Platteville at 1 and 4 pm.

Other sporting events coming up are the Women’s Tennis team opening up spring play on April 8th.  During this spring season, the tennis team will be traveling to Winona, MN and Glendale, WI where they will compete against four different schools.   The UW-Stout Women’s Soccer team has also started their spring season training portion.  You can catch them practicing before sunrise four times a week for the rest of the month.  At the end of this month, the Stout Soccer team will scrimmage against two very talented teams, Winona State University and Viterbo.  Also starting their spring training are the Women’s Volleyball and Football teams.
