Spring 2015 Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Hello friends!  It’s finally started to warm up in Memphis, and Rhodes campus is blossoming with new life everywhere you turn!  Now that it’s actually warm enough to wear shorts, bright colors, and sandals, I’m going to bring you the spring trends from Spring Fashion Week 2015!  I’ll be showing you images from the runways as well as more attainable street-style versions of the trends for this spring.  Let’s get started!

Colors and Patterns

Gingham

When I think of gingham, I automatically think of picnic blankets, finger sandwiches, and lemonade.  However, it looks like gingham is now acceptable to wear on your body for spring!  It seems to be associated with sweeter silhouettes, like the collared dress shown in the top photo.  I’ve also seen this pattern used in skirts for a pop of pattern, like on the model in the bottom photo, and also on pants and two piece outfits.

Pastels

Pastel is the most obvious trend for spring because it comes back year after year, but the reinterpretation of the trend this year is the layering of pastels instead of just having one pop of pastel.  Like the model in the top photo, the trend for this spring is the combination of different pastels in one clothing piece or in an entire outfit.  The popular method for combining several pastel colors is in a pattern, like the jumpsuit the woman in the bottom photo is wearing, or the jacket the model is wearing in the top photo.

Styling

Power shoulders

Power shoulders can include intricate shouldered or one-shouldered dresses and shirts, or the off-the-shoulder shirts or dresses pictured above.  Power shoulders are a huge trend for spring partially because of the cool quality of bearing one’s shoulders, as well as the recent trend of exposing clavicle bones.  Most women find exposing their shoulders flattering, or at least more comfortable in the warmer months.

Polo collars

Polo collars aren’t just meant for private school uniforms anymore.  They’ve started to come into mainstream fashion, probably due to their versatility and flattering shape (I really liked my school uniform).  They’re a great staple to flatter nearly anything, from complimenting a pair of jeans to dressing down a skirt.

Materials

Transparent clothing

Wearing sheer clothing makes perfect sense for the spring and summertime because of the weather change, so the trend of wearing sheer or transparent clothes makes perfect sense for this spring.  A theme I saw in the runway fashions that isn’t pictured in the top photo were the models wearing transparent skirts over colored or just black underwear.  I like the runway image above better because it really showcases how transparent clothing can be if you’re creative with your underwear choices.  However, a popular street style option is wearing a transparent skirt with a shirt covering the underwear area, or in the case of the woman above, wearing colorful underwear to match the pastel colors in the outfit.

Suede

The last big trend for spring I saw was suede.  Suede was everywhere on the runway, and personally I’m not sure why because I’m not a huge fan of suede, but for some reason the fashion gods decided suede would be a great material for this spring.  Specifically for spring, colored suede seems to be a popular option, such as the lavender and purple suede worn by the model in the top picture.  Mixing colors with suede is more interesting and on trend, like the patchwork skirt the girl in the bottom photo is wearing.  You won’t see me in any suede this spring, but it’s always an option if you’re a fan!

So there you have it!  These are all the big trends for Spring 2015.  Have fun mixing up your look for spring, and remember to always be cute!

Hi! I'm Sarah Johnson, and I am the Campus Correspondent for Her Campus Rhodes! I am a senior at Rhodes from Little Rock, AR. I am a Music major, I am a Research and Writing Fellow in the Curb Institute and I sing in the Women's Chorus. In my spare time I like to sleep, eat various snack foods, and watch beauty bloggers on YouTube. My main area of expertise is fashion. My personal style is definitely on the hip side of things, and my pattern of choice is stripes. Thirfting is my number one passion, and I hope to never pay full price for an item of clothing until I can actually afford it. I’ve recently noticed that I almost exclusively wear neutrals, which I am trying to remedy with the purchase of color, but it’s not working very well for me. I hope you all enjoy the articles I write and remember to always be cute!
