Sew Sorority: Redefining the Old T-shirt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Villanova chapter.

Meet Jeanette Bravo, an Arizona State University graduate who has started her own company, Sew Sorority. Sew Sorority is redefining the purpose of T-shirts by turning them into beautiful and memory filled quilts. Customizable and machine washable, Sew Sorority quilts make the perfect gift and can renew years of memories tucked away in old clothing. Jeanette is an inspiration to all college women who aspire to carve their own path and follow their passions.

HC: Can you tell us about your company, Sew Sorority?

JB: Sew Sorority can make any themed t-shirt quilt whether it is for a sorority, fraternity, school or even your favorite sports team. Prices vary on size and whether it is single or double sided. Also, I promise a three week turn around but its always quicker than that. Each square of the quilt is 12 in x 12 in. and you can always use the front, back or both sides of the t-shirt. That being said, you can use tanks, t-shirts and sweatshirts! Through myself, I can send you photos of fabric options for the back/border of the quilt. Moreover, I can send you photos of potential quilt layouts to ensure that you love everything about it. Every quilt is made with the best materials, it’s machine washable and shipping is always free!

*Also, this is a great idea for upcoming and past high school/college graduates!

HC: What was your major in college? Has your major helped you with your profession?

JB: I majored in Communication. Received two minors: Tourism Development and Management, Special Events Management. I received a certificate in Convention Sales and Meeting Planning. My studies have definitely helped me with Sew Sorority! Thanks to my coursework and internships, I’ve been able to apply my knowledge in public relations, marketing, and customer service. Outside of Sew Sorority, I work for a local resort.

HC: How did you come up with the idea to start Sew Sorority?

JB: One day I was sewing lace fabric onto the pockets of shorts. While I was sewing, my sister/sorority sister asked me to make her a t-shirt quilt out of her sorority shirts. Since I had never made a quilt before, I investigated how to make a quilt and I researched the best materials so I would be able to make a high quality quilt. After posting the final product on my personal social media accounts, I received a lot of compliments and a handful of friends wanted me to make their quilt as well! The more quilts I made and posted online, the more others interest grew. I ended up naming my business and creating social media accounts so I could direct friends to a public page to check out my work. As I love marketing, I immediately started posting my quilts, creating graphics, spreading the word and running fun promotions (which happens often so its an incentive to follow my pages)!

HC: Where do you see Sew Sorority in five years?

JB: I really hope to gain enough press and a following to become a common name among sororities. When women think of buying a quilt, I want them to automatically think of Sew Sorority because of the quality, the fact that it’s machine washable and it’s reliable.

HC: What is the best part of having your own business?

JB: The best part of having my own business is knowing that I created something that makes others happy. Moreover, I have a ton of fun marketing, collaborating and working with other businesses, emailing customers and talking about their T-shirts and I especially love seeing how happy customers are when they receive their quilt in the mail.

HC: What was the best part of being in a sorority?

JB:  The best part of being in a sorority was simply hanging out with a bunch of women who had similar interests as myself. Whether we went to a football game, a themed party on the weekend, a fraternity socials or when we hung out at the Memorial Union between class, my sorority was the foundation for my greatest college memories.

HC: What is one piece of advice you would offer to a college freshman?

JB: I definitely suggest that freshmen get involved in a club or organization! It’s a great way to meet people with similar interests and goals.
