Hacks for a Healthier You!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

People always talk about how they want to be “healthier,” but then struggle to find a place to start or feel overwhelmed by large, vague goals like “eat better,” “exercise more” or “be happier.” The most effective way to approach any large goal, especially a health related one, is to break it down into much smaller changes you can tackle every day. Making small, simple changes in your every day habits makes it easier to stick to your goal of becoming healthier. Try out a few of these tricks!

1. Drink 8-12 ounces of water first thing in the morning to re-hydrate your body. Adding lemon to the water is a great way to kick-start your metabolism too!

2. Walk instead of taking the shuttle. It’s spring now, which makes it easier to enjoy the weather! While you’re at it, always take the stairs instead of the elevator.

3. Do 1-3 minutes of plank before you shower – planks are a really effective way to tone your whole body.

4. Switch out soda with iced tea or sparkling water – seriously, cutting out soda is one of the best habits you can pick up.

5. Plug your phone in across the room from your bed so you can get a better night of sleep. This lets your mind and body truly unwind before bed, and you won’t be tempted to check your phone if you wake up in the middle of the night.

6. Swap out white, processed bread with whole grain bread instead!

7. Floss your teeth – dentists actually claim that it’s better for your teeth, gums and overall health than brushing.

8. Make a rule not to watch TV on your bed at night – this will make it harder to binge-watch Netflix until 3 a.m!

9. Swap out meat with a vegetarian substitute (tofu, beans, quinoa, etc) at least once a week.

10. Stretch for 5 minutes before bed – this will relax you and help you fall asleep. Plus, increased flexibility will definitely help your body as you get older!
