As summer quickly approaches and we decide whether to sublet our apartments for the summer and go home or just stay, consider these six reasons why Richmond is calling your name this summer.
1. Dominion Riverrock: May 15-17
Dominion Riverrock is a three-day long festival at Brown’s Island. It is actually the largest sports and music festival in the nation! Activities range from 5K mud runs, yoga, slack lining, awesome musicians and so much more cool stuff. This sounds like something no one would want to miss this summer and it’s free!
2. Watermelon Festival: August 9
If you are a watermelon lover then this festival is the place to be this summer. The Watermelon Festival is in Carytown on August 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will feature over 3,000 watermelons (wow) and 60 musicians. The Watermelon Festival is one of the largest one-day festivals in the state of Virginia. Mark your calendars, ladies!
3. Kings Dominion
Another perk of staying in Richmond this summer is the short 25-minute drive to Kings Dominion. Kings Dominion has a ton of thrill rides and a water park. It is literally Richmond’s neighbor and will make a fun summer day trip!
4. Bacon Festival: June 14
BACON FESTIVAL. What more words have to be said to make you want to go to this? The Bacon Festival is held at the 17th Street Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. I can just imagine how magical it will smell and how delicious all the bacon dishes will be. Along with tons of bacon there will be live music! Summer is better when bacon is involved.
5. Friday Cheers
2015 is the 31st season of Friday Cheers! For those you who don’t know, Friday Cheers is a series of concerts held at Brown’s Island every Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting May 1. Prices range from $5 to $10 depending on the show, a music lovers dream!
6. Â Adventures on the James River
Ah, the James River. There are endless amounts of fun things you can do on the James during the summer. You can sunbathe on the rocks at Belle Isle or get lost in a nature hike at Texas Beach. You can kayak and sup in the river and even swim in it. The adventure possibilities are endless.
We don’t want you to leave and neither does Richmond. How could you enjoy all of these amazing Richmond events and activities this summer if you go back home? You won’t find them anywhere else.Â
