Rebecca Carlone is a junior here at Quinnipiac, and she is so involved. She is a sister of Alpha Delta Pi, a member of the Student Government Association, and is on the Executive Board for the Big Event. (That’s only three out of the many other things she’s involved in!) How does Rebecca balance being so involved on top of her schoolwork? I talked with her to find out:
HC: Explain your involvement on campus.
RC: My involvement includes being a sister of Alpha Delta Pi, a member of SGA, [being on[ the Executive Board of the Big Event, Psi Chi (the psychology honor society) and Order of Omega (Greek honor society). I’m also looking forward to being on Junior Crew for Senior Week and inducted into the National Residence Hall Honorary soon!
HC: What are your roles in these campus organizations?
RC: I’m actually serving in my second term as Alpha Delta Pi’s Executive Vice President, which is basically keeping up with the administrative functions of the chapter. (I promise it’s more exciting than it sounds.) In addition, I am the Site Logistics Co-Chair for the Big Event, which means myself and my co-chair place teams at their sites and coordinate the buses. Finally, I’m currently a Junior Class Representative on SGA.
HC: What do you want to do upon graduation?
RC: I’ve always wanted to have a career that includes psychology and law, so as of right now my plan is to go to law school (hopefully in Washington D.C.) and become a family court lawyer. If not, I’ll probably look to get a masters degree and eventually a PhD in forensic psychology.
HC: Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing in your free time?
RC: Is it too stereotypical to say Netflix? But really, I like playing the piano when I get the chance and my boxing class is always something to look forward to. Besides that, probably binge-watching Disney movies (and Grey’s Anatomy slightly against my will) with my sisters would be my number one favorite activity.
HC: How do you balance being so involved on campus as well as being a good student?
RC: I think when you’re busy you have no choice but to plan ahead and manage your time. I don’t typically have a very strict work schedule, but I like to have a general timeline of when I plan on doing my assignments. It also helps to know when and where you do work best. For me, I don’t work well in the library or in silence, so if I’m doing work I either need to be in the Student Center or my room. On the involvement side, it’s just important to love what you do and remember it’s okay to take a break. You’re not doing your mind or body any favors by not resting every once in a while.
HC: What advice would you give to your freshman self?
RC: I would tell my freshman self not to be discouraged if something doesn’t go your way and that eventually you’ll figure out where you belong. When you put yourself out there, sometimes you hit home runs and sometimes you strike out. All that matters is that you get back to the plate and try again.
