5 DIY Masks You Haven’t Tried Yet (But Should)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

Everyone loves a good facial, and even more so when it costs little to nothing. So why not save money, and make your own masks? While picking the right ingredients for your skin type can be tricky and some recipies can be messy and time-consuming, there are plenty of quick and easy options to pick from. So never fear, here are 5 face masks that can be made from household items and will take 20 minutes or less!

Egg White Mask

Eggs, full of protein, are beneficial to healing, cleaning, and removing oil from the skin. They also help shrink pores.

For the mask, all that is needed is 2 egg whites and 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt mixed together. Leave the mixture on your face for a couple of minutes, rinse with warm water/warm washcloth, and voila!

Cocoa Coffee Mask

Chocolate and coffee are the perfect match, especially when it comes to facials. The combination decreases puffiness in the face, while brightening and reviving dull skin!

Mix 4 tablespoons of both unsweetened cocoa powder and ground coffee together. Then add 8 tablespoons of a liquid of your choice, either yogurt, egg, olive oil, or almond oil. If you have dry skin, you should add 2 tablespoons of honey. If you have oily skin, you should add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Remove the mask gently with a warm washcloth.

Cat Litter Mask

Yes, that DOES say kitty litter. Because of the clay in the litter, a mask made from this everyday product is claimed to absorb toxins from your skin, as well as the extra oil in your pores. Who knew!?

Before mixing the mask, make sure the litter is 100% natural clay. Then, mix 2 tablespoons of cat litter with 1/4 cup of water (or more, depending on your preference). Then, to make the experience less squeamish, add 3 drops of your favorite essential oils! Relax, and remove it 5-10 minutes later with cool water.

Pumpkin Mask

Pumpkins are super versatile; not only can you decorate them for Halloween, but you can also use them to improve your skin. Pumpkin masks brighten and calm the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of sun damage.

This mask takes a bit more effort. First, mix 1/2 cup of fresh pumpkin pulp and 2 eggs together. Then, depending on your skin type, another liquid should be added. For those with dry or combo skin, add 2 teaspoons of almond milk. For those with dry skin, add 1 teaspoon of honey. And for anyone with oily skin, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Generally, it is best to leave the mask on your face for 15-20 minutes, and then remove it with cool water.

Avocado

Instead of making guacamole the next time you buy avocados, try out a new mask. Avocados soothe and heal irritated skin, and with additional ingredients, they can rejuvenate your face and leave skin silky smooth.

Simply mix 1 avocado, 1 egg white, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice together. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, and wash it off with warm water.
