5 Ways to Cure Homesickness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

It is always hard returning to school after an enjoyable summer break. We become accustomed to seeing family and old friends, eating home-cooked meals, and sleeping in larger than twin xl – beds. Time at home flies by, and it is important to hold on to the memories spent at home, and simultaneously make room for the new ones we are lucky enough to experience at school. Leaving for college can make everyone feel a little homesick, so here are five easy ways to get over the initial hurdle of settling back into the school routine.

  1. Decorate the Right Way– One of the best parts of returning to school is decorating your new dorm room! It is important to personalize your room in a way that makes you feel more at home. Decorate with your favorite colors, hang up your cutest pictures, and furnish with keepsakes. This brings a piece of home everywhere you go.

  2. Stay Connected– Keeping in touch with friends and family is key when getting over the initial hurdle of leaving for school. FaceTime and Skype are amazing ways to stay connected because they allow for a more personal conversation, even when you’re hundreds of miles a part. It is important to be in contact with people from home, however, make sure you do not rely on it too much. Enjoy the time you have with the people around you, and make the effort to develop close connections with your fellow classmates!

  3. Spend Time With Friends– The first few days may feel a little lonely after leaving home, so it is important to spend time with your friends. Whether it means doing homework in the library together, going to grab food from Lakeside, or even just hanging in your dorm room, it makes any lonely days you may experience easier when you have some company.

  4. Movie Nights– Going out is a college favorite, but sometimes everyone just needs a night in to relieve some stress. Invite your friends over to watch a movie and order your favorite takeout food! Nothing beats cuddling, watching rom-coms, and being asleep by midnight when you’re in need of a night-life break. Even though you’re out and about being a social butterfly, never forget to have some “you” time.

  5. I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!– One of my most essential tips is to do something you love! My favorite food is ice cream; so treating myself to a scoop of ice cream always makes my day a little sweeter.

Getting over the little bump of homesickness in the road of college life leads the way for you to have the best four years possible here at Elon! Even if it seems hard transitioning into a new school year, it gets easier as time goes by. Enjoy the time you have on this beautiful campus and cherish every memory that comes from it – while still keeping a place for all of the wonderful times from home as well!
