I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wanted to know the care methods that ordinary girls like us take when it comes to curly hair. To learn more about the secrets to get the flawless curly hair, I checked in with four girls from our college. Check out the Q&A below!

Gabriella Martins, 20

College Course: Public Relations

“A lot of people ask me how to take care of curly hair, even strangers on the street!”

How do you take care of your hair?

“My first challenge was to discover how to take care of it. I wash it every 2 days. I usually use a lot of Leave In (a product I cannot leave without!) and a little bit of hair mouse to finalize. I brush my hair on the shower (only on the shower!) after shampoo and conditioner. After that, I use a hairdryer. Besides that, I always try to keep my hair hydrated. I don’t do it every week, especially because I use Leave In very often, but only four or five times a year.”

Have you ever thought about straighten your hair?

“Yes, which curly girl has never been through a situation like that? Fortunately, I gave up before I did something. I had the habit of straighten my hair to go to parties and special events, but only that.”

How to handle a bad hair day?

“For me, it is a challenge. I don’t like to put my hair up because of my face shape, so I usually make a bun or find a way to tie a scarf in it. Or I just accept: I’m in a bad hair day! It is part of the process to accept that our hair also has those days.”

Do you have any tips for curly hair girls?

“Do not brush you (sic) hair when it’s dry. Never! And don’t think you can solve frizz with water; it won’t work. You should discover which the best method for your hair is. Every person has a different hair type.”

Clara Góes, 20

College Course: Radio, TV and Internet

“A lot of people didn’t know that I had curly hair. I feel much more free now”.

How do you take care of your hair?

“I just wash it with baby shampoo. A few years ago, I started to look for different techniques for my hair type; I even went to a specialized hair salon. Because of that, I had results: my hair started to grow faster and became much curlier. I used to have straight hair because of my sister and friends’ influence. I’m from Rio de Janeiro, so when I used to go to the beach I had to come back to my house really quick because of my hair. And it was really boring. Today, this doesn’t happen anymore.”

How to handle a bad hair day?

“I usually find a way to do a simple hairstyle. Besides that, I always carry a hair spray in my bag, in case of a curly hair frizz emergency.”

Do you have any tips for curly hair girls?

“Girls, you should learn to value your curls. You need to know which technique is the best for your hair type.”

Beatriz Isler, 18

College Course: Journalism

“Be proud of your hair. This is something really nice that is getting a lot of attention nowadays”.

How do you take care of your hair?

“I wash my hair every three days, using a lot of shampoo and conditioner. I brush it on the shower from the roots down. When I’m done, I use a lot of hair cream. Today my hair is voluminous and I can move it from one side to another. When I was a child, it was divided in the middle, and it was bad for my self-esteem; I didn’t find myself pretty. In those times, all the characters from the movies and the cartoons had that beautiful blonde hair. When I looked at the mirror, I never saw anything like that. I was not like the other girls.”

When did you start to like your hair?

“When I was in high school, my mom took me to a hair salon, and the hairdresser told me that she had a new product called “capillary botox”: Suddenly, my hair had these perfect big curls with movement. After three or four months, the capillary botox’s effects passed. I never did it again because my hair started to look different. After this, I can say that my hair has its own personality.”

Do you have any tips for curly hair girls?

“The most important thing is to learn to take care of your hair: Each hair has its techniques and you will find a way to look pretty.”

Isabelle Marques, 18

College Course: Publicity & Advertisement

“The fact that you embrace your curly hair is amazing!”

How do you take care of your hair?

“I had straight hair, but last year I decided to change. These days I always try to do hair hydration two times a month. Before that, I used to wash my hair every day; today I only wash it every two or thre days and use a little bit of hair mousse to finalize.”

How to handle a bad hair day?

“Most of times, I find a way to do a simple hairstyle using a headband or just tie a scarf in my hair.”

Do you have any tips for curly hair girls?

“If a person really likes her hair, she should embrace it. The most important thing is to feel good about yourself.”
