Why I Continue to Keep Up with the Kardashians

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

In today’s popular culture, the Kardashian name is more than a family – it is a brand, a lifestyle, and, for many, an addiction. These infamous women are often criticized for a lack of depth, which values appearance over all else. However, this shallow and fame driven lifestyle happens to make incredibly good television.

In attending Notre Dame, it is possible to find yourself constantly overwhelmed by the stress and workload that come with a challenging curriculum. This is why you need the Kardashians in your life. The purpose of reality television is not to foster personal growth, but to offer an outlet or an escape from the constant movement of daily life. Keeping Up with the Kardashians provides you with a complete hour of mind numbing relaxation in which you can trade in the stress of your life for the drama of theirs.

Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe are largely known as the focus of the television show, each sister bringing her own unique personality to the table. Though Kourtney is the eldest, Kim and her larger than life curves are often said to be the foundation of the family’s fame. She is credited with inspiring body and style goals among women around the world and her signature make-up look has made her the envy of many. Still, it is the collective beauty of the Kardashian sisters that is truly amazing. Kourtney, Kim and Khloe have graced the covers of a wide array of magazines, designed a clothing line, and have created a curve campaign that hopes to inspire women to love the skin they’re in. I would be lying if I claimed that I have never watched a Kardashian make-up tutorial or googled Kim Kardashian’s workout routine, and I am sure I’m not alone. Their beauty is a key contributor to the success of the Kardashian brand, and that is nothing to be ashamed of.

These sisters have embarked on numerous business ventures with one another, taken endorsements, and created a brand that is not only focused on fame, but also on family. It’s impossible to argue that these women are not shallow and often ridiculous, but there is a depth to their bond. This focus on family adds a dimension to the Kardashians that many often overlook. Keeping Up with the Kardashians is successful because of the family’s interesting and entertaining relationship. These women are intriguing individually, but are elevated by their interactions with one another. The television offers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous, a world that is often shrouded by glitz and glamour.

Therefore, I appreciate the Kardashians for what they do for me, rather than what they do to society. They have provided me with a guilty pleasure that I have continually been forced to justify, but that has also brought me peace of mind. I do not believe that hours spent keeping up with the Kardashians are hours wasted, for it is in those moments that we can allow ourselves to sit back, relax, and act simply as a spectator in this chaotic world.
