When and Wear: New York Fashion Week 2015

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

It’s that magical time of year again! No, silly, I don’t mean Christmas (although with the temperatures finally dropping below human oven levels of heat in South Bend, it might as well be).  September 10th marked the beginning of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York and the Spring and Summer’s most sought after looks are all on display. Let’s see if I can make it through this post with a single Devil Wears Prada reference…

Well, I certainly tried.

Following New York Fashion Week is one of my favorite pastimes. Sometimes the clothes are totally stylish and cool; sometimes the clothes are downright kooky (If I wanted to resemble a trash bag, I would pay 5 cents, not 5 grand). Nonetheless, fashion is beautiful, and I’m sure that all of our friends at Lincoln Center would agree. Here are some of my favorite lines to look for this year!

Sophie Thealett

Show Livestream: 5pm September 15th

A favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, Sophie Thealett puts a unique spin on the flirty and colorblocked looks classic of Oscar de la Renta. Formal wear in manner of Grecian goddess, Thealett’s spring and summer frocks for 2016 are guaranteed to stun this year!

Carmen Marc Valvo

Show Livestream: 5 PM September15th

Carmen Marc Valvo has been in the game for nearly thirty years. In that time, he’s found the perfect balance between edgy and feminine and that means a lot of mixture of textures.

Clover Canyon

Show Livestream: 5pm September 16th

Speaking of the “one of these things is not like the other” strategy of design, California-chic brand Clover Canyon lives to mix prints; polka dots, tribal motifs, and florals happily coexist in their pieces. Their line of swimwear is about to become your spring break bestie.

Hervé Léger

Show Livestream: 1pm September 12th

The king of bodycon, Hervé Léger knows how to make neutrals noticeable. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the line, so the Spring / Summer 2016 line will definitely not disappoint.

Tracy Reese

Show Livestream: 2pm September 13th

Mindy Kaling, Tracy Ellis Ross, and Sarah Jessica Parker have all rocked Reese’s designs during appearances, and the love doesn’t stop there! She’s a regular favorite of Women’s Wear Daily and Vogue. Accolades aside, her vibrant looks have just the slightest touch of mod: perfect for every lover of vintage.

Milly

Show Livestream: 3pm September 15th

If you’re a fan of the Kate Spade New York of late, then you’re guaranteed to fall in love with Milly’s classic, yet bold looks. Citing everyone from her own mother to French director Jean-Luc Godard as inspirations of hers, creative director Michelle Smith merges Americana and Parisian flair in her line: a match made in style heaven!

See something you like? I bet it’d look great on you! If you’re interested in getting your hands on some designer duds of your own, be sure to take a look at www.renttherunway.com. All the designers mentioned above have satellite boutiques through the website, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to expand you’re closet without having to expand your budget. In addition, all of the shows are being livecast through www.newyorkfashionweeklive.com, so be sure to check that out!
