This weeks Campus Celebrity isn’t just your average legging-loving, wine-sipping (or chugging), coffee-spilling girl (who is also a third year English major). She can also be found dancing in UCC (dancer and choreographer for This Is London dance team), as a Kings Soph, the Commissioner at Large for KUCSC, and is also a brand new HC Western Ontario contributing writer! Fellow mustangs, meet the talented (and extremely busy) Sarah Magyar.
You technically go to King’s College, what is the biggest misconception main campus students have about King’s?That King’s isn’t the same as Western. I get it all the time, people always react weird when I say I go to King’s. In the end I still graduate with a Western degree, it will just say I went to King’s. And on the plus side my class sizes usually vary from 20-50 people so profs know my name AND its easier to get help (aka do well).
What made you chose English as a major? It’s funny because I couldn’t read until I was in grade 3. I always preferred math, but as I grew up I had teachers who emphasized reading comprehension and, well, here I am. More specifically every English teacher I had in high school I looked up to and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. I am a future high school English teacher in the making.
You’re a choreographer for ‘This Is London’, why did you choose this team and how did you get involved?I’ve been a dancer for 15 years and competing for 13. Coming to university I just couldn’t cut dance out of my life, as it was always such a big part. I looked around for different teams but didn’t find one I felt comfortable being on. My friend told me of TIL (This is London) and right when I walked into the audition I knew I wanted to be on the team. I remember getting the email that I was on the team and crying!! I love my team more than anything and couldn’t imagine being at Western and not being with my TIL family.
You’ve been selected as a 2015-2016 King’s Soph this year! What part of this opportunity are you most excited about? I am so excited for every little part that being a Soph entails!! I was lucky enough to be chosen to be on the Soph Spirit team, meaning I get to lead cheers, teach dances, and overall be a hype person. I’m so excited to welcome in the frosh and introduce them to all King’s, and Western, has to offer.
You have a gluten allergy, is it difficult to find gluten-free items on campus? I’ve known of my allergy for about 3 years now so I’m used to it. It is a little difficult but I try not to eat carbs, so salads are my best friend.
What’s your role on Student Council?I am Commissioner at Large. Basically I help over look and organize all events at King’s. I don’t have a specific event that I organize, I do a little bit for everything.
You must be extremely busy! How do you make time to relax?I can’t say that I do! I love being active and keeping busy (clearly). I do enjoy the odd Netflix binge but overall I’d prefer to be out for a run, dancing, or at the gym rather than being lazy and watching movies.
What is your biggest wish?Oh man. I have no idea. World peace? Does that count?
What is your biggest fear?Heights. But I’m an adrenaline junkie so, yes, I will go sky diving and love roller coasters.
We’re so happy that you’ve chosen to write for Her Campus this year! How did you get involved?Well, Kellie, since you asked, I’ve worked with you for two summers in a row and you told me about it. And I love writing (especially about things that aren’t going to be marked).
Have any upcoming stories in mind that we should stay tuned for?Something about the Wizard of Oz and University. Stay tuned friends.
How important is it for you to be involved with school clubs and activities? Why?If you couldn’t tell it is very important for me. I want to make a different in my spare time and not lounge around. I want to be able to say I did something in University not just went to school. I’m also very social so why not combine them all in one!
What has been the best or most rewarding moment of your University career so far?Finding out I was on the Soph team
What advice would you give to first years coming to Western or Kings this year?University will be the best 4 years of your life. Be who you want to become. It’s ok to have absolutely no idea what you want to do and it is totally ok to switch your module every year.
How can new students go about auditioning for the ‘This Is London (TIL)’ dance team?AUDITIONS IN ALTHOUSE COLLEGE GYM ON SEPTEMBER 20 2:30-4:30Or contact thisislondonuwo@gmail.com for infoSee you there xoxo
