- You don’t have a fenced-in backyardDogs need space, and if you live in an aparment, they can’t spend as much time outside as they need to. Too much time inside can lead to doggie depression.
- You sleep in until the last possible secondDogs take up A LOT of time. If you hit snooze 6 times each morning, you won’t have time to take your dog outside to do his business and sniff around. Because *news flash* dogs don’t want to go outside to pee and then immediately go back inside their house. They want to be outside!
- You hate walksOn a second branch of that, if you aren’t willing to take the time to take your dog on walks or to the dog park regularly, then you shouldn’t get a dog.
- You aren’t willing to clean up their accidentsTbh this is a big one for me. poop is gross. Enough said.
- And you don’t want accidents happening on your stuffI know I’m not alone on this one. Some dogs take you leaving something on the ground as a sign that they can pee on it, and that’s generally not the case.
- You don’t sleep in your own bed every nightNo judgement, you’re allowed to sleep in whom ever’s bed you want to, as much as you want to. But if you have a dog at home, are they just supposed to stay there all night by themselves? And into the morning for who knows how long. And that goes into my next point…
- You have roommatesJust because there are other people at your house, doesn’t mean that they should have to take care of your dog. It’s YOUR DOG for a reason.
- You can barely afford the expenses you have nowNetflix, phone bill, apartment rent, take-out, groceries, wine, nail appointments, utilities, the list goes on and on of things that you’re already paying for. Plus what if your dog gets sick or hurt? Medicine and surgeries can cost thousands of dollars.
- You can barely balance your school, work and social life as it isIf you have ever said to a friend “I just don’t have enough time for all of this!” then you definitely don’t have time for a dog either.
- You’re in college! These are going to be the last years that you’ll have as few responsibilites as you do (school, a part time job maybe, friends, an aparment: That’s really not that many things when you think about where you could be in a year or two. Think mortgages, children, career furthering, etc.) You should take advantage of this time and have fun, figure out who you are and live it up while you can.
Yes, dogs are fun, but they are a huge responsibility and you’ll have plenty of time in a year or two to get a dog. So just be patient and it’ll only be that much better when you are responsible enough for a furry friend.
