When I go out wearing heels, I usually am asked “How do your feet not hurt? How can you walk in those?!” Well, these are my quick 6 secrets:

1. Wear the right size!

Wearing the correct size makes it so much easier for your toes to not be squished or moving around inside extra space in the shoe.  Also, if you wear too small of a size, ingrown toe nails, bunions, or blisters are likely to happen.

2. Wear heels with a platform!

If the shoe I have doesn’t have a thicker platform, I add cushions near the toes because it takes off stress by the toes.  Also, I’ve found wedges are typically easier to wear than high heels because of their platform.

3. Break-in the heels by wearing them before the event.

For instance, for prom I practiced walking around the house in my heels.  J. Alexander in Glamour magazine said,”Scratch the bottom of your soles with sandpaper” to break them in.

4. Slow dooooown!

And don’t run.  Wearing heels makes me walk differently, so take smaller steps, this takes some practice. “Wearing heels naturally makes your stride shorter, so you’ll need to take more steps than usual,” Basine wrote on College Fashion. “Don’t expect to be able to walk as fast as you normally do in high heels.”

5. The thicker the heel the better.

You won’t have to worry about the possibility of losing your balance or breaking it! Believe it or not, wedges are easier to walk in because of their thicker platform and “heel”.  If you’re going to be dancing, wear a smaller than 3” heel.

6. For safety, I personally never drive wearing high heels.

If you know you’re going to be driving, bring a spare of shoes just for driving.

There you have it. Get a thick platform and thicker heel in your correct size shoe, break-in the shoes before wearing them, walk slower while moving heel then toe, and safely wear them!
