Campus Celebrity Juan Gabriel Delgado Montes 16′

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Tell me about where are you from:

My family and I are from La Paz, Bolivia a beautiful city about 12,000 feet (4km) above sea level. Although, in all honesty I’ve barely lived in my own country…Oops…

How does the weather at Amherst compare to the weather back home?:

Home is a tricky concept, but La Paz has pretty moody weather because of the altitude: if you stand in the sun you’ll feel like you’re slowly roasting (that’s what being 12,000 ft closer to the sun does), and if you stand in the shade…it will be cold! There is hardly anything in-between. Its definitely easier to dress for the weather at Amherst!

Why did you choose to attend Amherst?:

Being one of only 4 universities in the US that is need-blind for international students is definitely a plus, but the view from memorial hill and small classes didn’t hurt either.

What’s are you interested in both academically and leisurely?:

I am super passionate about international development and human quality of life. Really, I want to help find out and give people around the world  the opportunity to have what they need and/or want to live well holistically. The more I learn about this, the more I realize that its really not just about income and wealth, its really about respect, opportunity, and personal growth.

I really enjoy reading and dancing, unfortunately, Amherst parties are lacking in the latter!

What’s are you passionate about the most?:

I’m all about my familia and those I care for.

What are your plans for the rest of your time at Amherst and beyond:

Well, after retiring from the AAS and RCing, I have more time on my hands, but now I spend it trying to write my political science thesis and finding a meaningful job. Oh yes, I also plan to invite old and new friends to to cook dinner in my off-campus housing. I’m looking forward to spending quality time with Amherst people.

If you could make one change to the world, playful or serious, what would it be?:

Get rid of visa requirements to visit countries. Much simpler.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to say but never got the chance to say it?:

Your path is made simply by walking it.
