Whether you’re a nervous freshman or an experienced senior, fall semester at the University of Michigan can be a bit overwhelming. With so many eager students, awesome events, and plenty of open parties, drinking will play a major role on campus during these first few weekends. However, with all this excitement on campus, students need to recognize the boundary between being safe and having fun. Here are some helpful safety tips that will aid you during fall semester and for the rest of the year.
1. Mix Your Own Drinks: Although that jungle juice may look enticing, it’s hard to tell your limit when you don’t know what’s in your drink. So be sure to mix your own drinks at home, measure your shots, and drink from unopened bottles or cans at parties.
2. Use the Buddy System: Whether you’re intoxicated or sober, you should always walk with a buddy after dark. Ann Arbor is a fairly large city, which makes walking alone, especially while intoxicated, a not so safe option. So stick with a buddy or group whenever possible.
3. Download “Stay in the Blue” App: The University of Michigan specifically designed this smartphone app to keep Michigan students safe when drinking occurs. The app includes a Call-a-Cab feature, a BAC calculator, a feature that tracks your drinking habits, and a list of events going on around Ann Arbor. It’s a great way to manage your drinking and stay safe. https://www.uhs.umich.edu/stayintheblue
4. Prepare: If you know you’re going to be drinking that night, make sure you prepare. This includes eating a substantial dinner and drinking plenty of water. By doing so, you will help prevent any unwanted sickness from drinking on an empty stomach or from dehydration.
5. Ask for Help: Lastly, if you are already past your limit, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether you go to a friend, RA, classmate, or trustworthy acquaintance, you can always find help when in need. Also, remember that Medical Amnesty permits legal immunity for intoxicated students who need immediate medical attention.
