First, let me start by telling you, I am a coffee fanatic. As I shut my eyes for sleep, I eagerly look forward to my morning cup of coffee (and sometimes afternoon and night). I love the smell of roasted bean that lingers as the hot water rinses my mug as I wash it. I especially love the smell of fresh coffee as it brews in the morning. Anyways, enough about my love for coffee. My family is concerned about my addiction to coffee. They are worried for my health because it is rumored that coffee is bad for you. Coffee addicts, I have some great news for you! More research suggests that coffee may have some health benefits. Yes, benefits.

1. Coffee actually makes you smarter!

Yes fellow college students, coffee makes you smarter. Coffee contains this thing called caffeine. Caffeine causes your neurons (cells that control all brain function) to fire at a much faster rate. Through research, scientists have found that coffee improves a number of areas of the brain, such as memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times, and general cognitive function. So next time you ace your exam, don’t forget to credit your coffee habits.

2. Coffee fights disease.

It seems like now a days almost everything you put into your body has a bad affect. Well this delicious morning beverage has been proven to reduce your chance of getting diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, certain types of cancer, and heart disease. It also helps protect you from Alzheimer’s disease and protects your liver (and we all know our livers can use some help). Coffee also fights depression. If you’re a four-cup-a-day type of person like me, then you’re better protected from depression. Why is coffee so good for your health? One word, antioxidants.

3. Coffee helps burn fat.

As college students, we are all scared of the infamous “freshman 15”. Luckily, coffee can help prevent that. Caffeine is a natural substance that aids in fat burning. Coffee also increases your “fight or flight” hormone, making you ready for exerting a large amount of physical strength. So before you go to the gym, drink a strong cup of coffee about a half hour before for a good workout!

Next time someone lectures you on your health because of coffee, remember all of these great benefits!
