9 Reasons To Go See Big Stone Gap on October 9th!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Saint Mary's chapter.

This Friday, October 9th marks the day New York Times best-selling author and (more importantly) 1981 Saint Mary’s grad, Adriana Trigiani takes her novel, Big Stone Gap, to the BIG screen!

Why should you go see #BigStoneGapMovie, you ask? Well, after you enjoy the trailer, below are 9 reasons why every Belle (and others) should take the hour and forty-three minutes to soak in all that is late 1970’s Southwest Virginia.

1) Adriana Trigiani is a Belle. A Belle who has written several award winning, bestselling novels and is now bringing her debut one to theaters. Has there ever been a better time to say #GoBelles?

2) Patrick Wilson. Looking like this. ‘Enuf said.

3) It’s a feel-good story that won’t have you leaving the theater sad or disheartened. Trust me, as Adri’s intern this summer, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing it a couple times, and I can tell you first hand, it’ll only get you crying happy tears.

4) The cast. Aside from Mr. Wilson, Ashley Judd, Whoopi Goldberg, John Benjamin Hickey, and more…talk about famous all-stars! The entire cast has such an amazing reputation and work so well together; their acting will have you in stitches of laughter.

5) It’s a cheap date. South Bend theater is like, $3 for students. What better way to start the weekend?!

6) It’ll get you in the fall spirit. Shot on location in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, the fall colors presented in the movie will more than likely send you to Starbucks right after to grab that Pumpkin Spice Latte.

7) Another reason to appreciate family and friends. As if Belles need another excuse to obsess over each other. If you’ve read Big Stone Gap, then you know this novel captures a heartwarming tale of family, love, and self –discovery. Catch that SMC theme? You may remember Sister Madaleva’s famous quote, “We promise you discovery: discovery of yourselves, discovery of the universe, and your place in it.” Adri IS a Belle, through and through!

8) Appalachian Mountains. Been on the infamous ND Appalachia service trip? This movie is likely to take you back to that wonderful, service-filled memory!

9) October 9th is opening night. The better the movie does on opening night, the more people who get to see it all over the country! There are so many locations, so there are no excuses to not be a part of something AMAZING!

If these reasons aren’t enough to convince you to head down to AMC Showplace South Bend 16, just keep one thing in mind: a Saint Mary’s alum has a movie coming out all across the nation that she created, wrote, AND directed. How cool is that?! Let’s show our SMC pride and sell out theaters for Adri because…GO BELLES!!

Buy pre-sale tickets online here! And of course, make sure to read the book, too!
