4 Signs that the Honeymoon Phase is Over

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Whether we want to believe it or not, the honeymoon phase is a real thing. If this term is new to you, the honeymoon phase is known as the period of time when you first enter a relationship. You know, when you and your significant other are around each other 24/7, never argue, and everything is literally perfect. Well, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. If your relationship is forever in the honeymoon phase, kudos to you! But if you’re like 90 percent of other couples in the country, the honeymoon phase will come to a halt. But how do you know when the honeymoon phase is over? Here are a few signs:

1. Your true colors start to show

It’s only natural to start getting comfortable in a relationship after the first few months. And it’s a great thing to feel that you can loosen up and be comfortable around someone. Unfortunately, getting comfortable is not always a good thing and sometimes we can tend to get a little too comfortable. When this happens, our true colors start to show. For example, if you’re a jealous person that may start to show. If you’re a control freak, that might start to come out too. It’s not like you were trying to hide who you really were in the beginning; you were just trying much harder to not let it interfere with your relationship.

2. You & bae start arguing

Whether they start off being small arguments or really big arguments, it is inevitable for arguments to pop up in your relationship. Sometimes, they can even be bad enough to end the relationship. When you first get together with someone, it’s really easy to not have much to argue about, which is why it will rarely (if ever) happen. However, once you’ve been together long enough, the smallest things can send you over the edge.

3. Breaking plans

When you first get together with someone, it’s so easy and practically not even a question to blow your friends off for your significant other. Even if you had those plans for weeks or they just pop up at the spur of the moment, bae time is bae time; friends can wait. But once the honeymoon phase is over, you don’t try as hard to make plans with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or to keep those plans for that matter.

4. Patterns and behaviors change

Remember those good morning texts you’d wake up to each day, or the goodnight texts you’d get every night before falling asleep? Well, when the honeymoon phase is over, those things are no longer a routine thing. You may still get them every now and then, but you won’t be surprised when you go a day or two without getting one.

The truth is, the honeymoon phase doesn’t have to exist. Nothing really has to change from the time you first start dating someone to when you’re dating them three years down the road. What matters is effort, not timing. So here’s to letting the honeymoon phase be never-ending!
