Eating Healthy on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

If you’re like most college students, eating healthy can be a challenge. Meal plans are restrictive and cafeterias often have ready-to-go items and limited amounts of fresh fruit or veggies. Here are some simply tricks you can use to skip the dreaded freshman fifteen -or lose it.

1. Reduce, Reuse, and Plan Ahead!

Make a grocery list. Start with your protein and vegetables. The rest is easy to fill in later. If it’s not on your list, don’t buy it! Throwing extra junk food or sweets adds up quickly. Try and pick items that are filling, so you aren’t craving those snacks later on. Use what food you have first. You can use apps or sites like “My Fridge Food”. The app allows you to select foods or ingredients you already have, and will list recipes that combines them, and lets you know what you still need to add to your list. If you aren’t a great cook yet you can learn! No ideas? Try whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com. The site is pretty funny, and will link you right to the recipe of how to make the entree. They have drinks and vegan options as well.

2. Steal the Deal

Buying in bulk may seem expensive. you may not need the extra right now, but you will save significantly in the long run. This is also great to allow you to plan your meals and portion your meals ahead of time. You can take out what you will cook today or tomorrow and freeze the rest. Don’t have extra freezer room? Grab a friend and split the bill and the goods. Now you can buy in bulk without the bulk.

3. Join the Club

A lot of stores have member’s cards or “club” cards that you can use to get extra deals. Try Weis or Giant. Their points will add up to gas points, so you can save twice! If you don’t have the card with you, they can usually look it up with your phone number. The cards are free, so there is nothing to lose!

4. Skip the Frozen Section

Frozen foods are awesome when you need something fast, but they are also packed with salts and other preservatives. Fresh produce is super cheap. Instead of snacking on pizza pockets, stock up on fresh fruit or veggies. Apples are in season at the moment and are super cheap.
