Best Fall Accessory: Healthy Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

It’s that wonderful time of year again… fall! Everywhere you turn there are pumpkins, oversized sweaters, caramel apples, riding boots, and blankets disguised as scarves.  The one thing we all can agree on is that fall fashion and fall weather are the best of the year, and nothing compliments an outfit quite like healthy, beautiful skin.  But with crisp breezes during the day, cold nights at football games, and the stress of midterms, fall can wreak havoc on any girl’s complexion.  Here are some quick tips to make sure your skin is as warm and refreshing this season as your favorite pumpkin spice latté.

1. Keep your skin clean.

If you are not cleansing your skin morning and night regularly, you are only providing your pores with a home for icky bacteria and dead skin cells to multiply.  Whether you use a gentle cleanser or anti-acne cream, washing your face regularly is the first step in maintaining that summer-to-fall radiance.  And never, ever, EVER sleep in your makeup (on purpose). Ever.

2. Hydration.

As the weather is becoming colder and drier, it is important to make healthy hydrating habits for your skin now that you can keep throughout the winter.  Use a light, non-greasy moisturizer after cleansing your face and drink plenty of water.  It is recommended to drink eight glasses of water per day, which does sound crazy but can make a big difference!

3. Go natural.

Don’t be afraid to take a day off from your favorite warm and sultry fall makeup looks to give your skin some time to breathe.  And when you’re treating your skin at night, take a chance with some natural products rather than your typical drugstore purchases.  Honey and olive oil are excellent substitutes for cleansers that you can combine with sugar and lemon juice to make the perfect hydrating scrub.  With simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen, you can save money and save your complexion. 4. Relax!

The autumn semester can be a very stressful time in the school year, and your skin will tell you right away just how stressed you are.  Schedule time to relax in your day and make an honest attempt at getting some sleep at night.  Kick your feet up, turn on Netflix, make some tea, and enjoy doing nothing as often as you can. You’ve earned it.

I hope these tips help you maintain glowing skin all year long.  Happy fall!
