8 Stages of the Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

The days are getting colder and it is starting to get dark outside earlier. We all know what that means:

It may only be October, but in a blink of an eye we will be surrounded by five foot snow banks and waking up to the sound of snowplows and people shoveling trying to do anything they can so class isn’t canceled. ‘Tis the season for the winter blues

1. Denial

First and foremost, you will deny that cold weather is coming until the first snowfall. You refuse to put away the shorts until the last possible second.

2. The excessive use of lip balm

You realize that your lips start to become chapped and your hands are dry. You’re burning through a new lip balm every other week and cry a little when you forget to bring it to class.

3. The static hair conundrum

The next sign of winter is the awful feeling of hair sticking to your neck, face or even straight into the air.  Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it. This stage will be the bane of your existence.

4. The stay in or go out dilemma

Deciding whether or not it is worth to even walk anywhere in the miserable weather. You step outside and decide “nope!” and turn right back around.  In this stage you will constantly find yourself thinking “can I just teleport to the bar?”

5. The Netflix binge

In this stage you realize that you have officially watched all of the TV series and movies on your Netflix watch list…and your friends.

6. Getting bundled up from head to toe

At some point you realize that you must leave your dorm or apartment after a week of sitting in your bed, whether it is for class or to buy food so you don’t starve. Don’t be alarmed if you can’t move or bend your limbs, it means you are actually doing it right.

7. The dreaded “life” questions

Mentally preparing yourself to be bombarded with questions at your family’s holiday party like, “What do you want to do with that major?” and “Any significant others in your life?”

8. Spring Fever

Being stranded in your dorm or apartment is actually becoming painful and this is usually the stage where you start to plan your Spring Break. Then you look out of the window and start to cry a little on the inside.

But don’t worry! It will be over before you know it…hopefully.
