Allie Hackel ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Name: Allie Hackel

Year: 2016

Hometown: Ambler, Pennsylvania

Major/Minor: Business and East Asian Studies double major

Her Campus: What attracted you to Brandeis?

Allie Hackel: It’s a really good school academically, but also it’s a really fun and accepting place. When I came to visit, I stayed with my sister’s friend and she invited me to hang out with all her friends. It was really nice and they were really friendly, and it just seemed like a good place.

HC: What activities are you involved in on campus?

AH: I’m in SDT, I’m a Gallery Guide at the Rose, and I’m a part of Kinetic. Kinetic is a new think tank at Brandeis, and we’re working on two different initiatives right now. The club is divided into two sides—Social Impact and Public Policy. I’m on the Policy side, and our topic is Environmental Sustainability; the Social Impact topic is Homelessness. We work independently, but all the ideas that are coming out are already so cool, even though the club is still very much in its early stages.

HC: What are your goals for your senior year?

AH: To enjoy my time here and to really get into all the things I’m passionate about. Getting involved in Kinetic has been so great, and I’m starting to commit more seriously to learning Chinese, which is wild. Also, I want to have fun with my friends.

HC: What’s your advice for incoming first-years?

AH: Don’t live in extremes. I know during my first year that things were either really great or really awful, and that’s not how life should work. It’s better to take things as they come and roll with the stresses of starting a new school and being in a new place.

HC: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

AH: I have no idea. Get back to me in ten years.

Single or Taken: Single

Favorite Movie: Clerks

Favorite Band: The Artic Monkeys

Favorite Spot on Campus: I love the Rose. It’s so underrated-ly the greatest place ever.

Favorite Song of the Moment: “You Still Believe in Me” by the Beach Boys. It’s such a beautiful song.

Favorite Boston Attraction: SoWa Market

Prized Possession: The sneakers that I’m wearing right now. I got them when I was aboard last semester in China. They’re some sweet sneakers.

Mya is a sophomore at Brandeis University. She is an Education major with minors in African and Afro-American Studies and Anthropology. When she’s not writing, you can find Mya playing for the Brandeis women’s soccer team or attempting to navigate Boston. She also enjoys dancing and is a firm believer that what she lacks in technique she can make up in enthusiasm. She’s originally from sunny South Florida and can frequently be seen sporting her winter coat indoors. Follow her on Instagram @myagoodman for sporadic postings of her life!
I am a double major in Anthropology and International/Global Studies with a minor in Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation at Brandeis University. As a native Southern Californian, I have a born passion for avocados and an innate dread of cold weather. In my free time I love cooking (with avocados of course), drawing and writing.
