There was never a doubt in Jimmy Hutson’s mind that he would be involved in Oklahoma State University’s Homecoming celebration. In fact, it played a large role in his decision to leave Burns Flat, Okla. after high school and head to Stillwater.
Now in his senior year as an agribusiness and agricultural communications double major, it seems like a fitting end that Hutson is serving his second (and final) year as the OSU Homecoming executive team’s Executive Director.
“During my freshman year, I applied to be on the Homecoming BIG Committee,” Hutson says. “I knew OSU was going to give me a lot while I was here, and I wanted to give back to OSU. I was fortunate enough to find my passion early.”
So what exactly does the Executive Director of America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration do?
“One thing many people don’t know is that OSU Homecoming is completely run by students,” Hutson says. “I oversee nine other executives, 60 Steering members and 130 BIG Committee members to ensure Homecoming is carried out.”
Hutson says that the other students on his team are just as passionate about OSU Homecoming as he is, and he’s enjoyed seeing them all grow as leaders who, in turn, influence him to be a better leader and a better person.
At the end of Homecoming week, Hutson can hang up his hat as Executive Director, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be leaving OSU Homecoming behind. He’ll definitely be back on the other side as an OSU alumnus.
“When you serve on the student side of Homecoming, you grow a greater appreciation for all the months of planning,” Hutson says. “It is amazing what the students on this campus do to help OSU keep the title of ‘America’s Greatest Homecoming’.”
