Kehlani: Bay Area Roots, Worldwide Appeal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

At this point in 2015, a pretty darn good amount of adolescents to twenty-somethings know that Bay Area artist Kehlani is on fire. Hailing from Oakland, California, and first popping up on the radar with an appearance on America’s Got Talent in 2011, Kehlani released You Should Be Here in April of this year, her second but most well-known mixtape. At twenty years old, Kehlani is lending her voice to all you collegiettes out there, helping you pursue self-love and get through heartbreaks. We’ve taken a listen to her newest mixtape, and here’s our top three songs, and our favorite lyric(s):

1) “The Way” featuring Chance the Rapper: By far, this is the most popular song out on radio waves right now. A soulful ode to your boo, “The Way” is all about how that special someone gives you a feeling you’ve never had before.

Our Fave Lyrics: “He say he a king where he come from, takes a young queen just to know one.” (Sure does, Kehlani.)

2) “Alive” featuring Coucheron: Have you ever felt like your world was absolutely torn after a break up? This song will give you a new lease on life – it’s also appeared on T-Swift’s Instagrammed list of “new songs that will make your life more awesome.” If she’s endorsed by T-Swift, we definitely think she’s worth a listen.

Our Fave Lyrics: “I deserve a love that is gonna last, but until then, I will just raise this glass!” (This song was made for Gauchos.)

3) “You Should Be Here”: The title track to the mixtape, ‘YSBH’ takes an intense look at all those who let you go – and why they should regret it. You’re killin’ it, and why wouldn’t you be? Listen to this if you need some encouragement when you’re feeling down about the loss of a friend or an old flame.

Our Fave Lyrics: “You pulled away, and I miss your presence – I always said to you, baby, you should be here.” (You’ll miss them, but eventually the roles will switch. Trust us, Kehlani knows best.)

If you want to know more, Kehlani’s Wikipedia page is finally circling the web, and she has a YouTube channel, as well as an Instagram. You can also listen to or download her mixtape on both Apple Music and Spotify. You have no excuse, go explore – happy listening!
