HCUK Campus Celebrity: Rosie Ecker

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Name: Rosie Ecker

Age: 20

Year: Junior

Major: ISC, with a minor in media arts and design

Hometown: Terrace Park, Ohio

Campus Celeb Status: KRNL fashion editor

Her Campus: How and why did you first get involved with the KRNL here at UK?

Rosie Ecker: My mom set up a tour for me when I was a junior in high school to see what an ISC major is like at UK. Part of the tour included visiting The Kentucky Kernel and talking to May May Barton, the faculty design advisor, about what all the Kernel does. When I started as a freshman at UK, I emailed May May to see if I could help out at the Kernel and she said “yes!” Freshman and sophomore year of college, I sold ads for the newspaper and the fashion magazine.

HC: What are your responsibilities as the fashion editor for KRNL?

RE: I work with May May to make sure tasks are getting completed on time and well. I also come up with the different style sections of the magazine and then coordinate the photo shoot location to the sections. I also work with the KRNL team to publish a KRNL broadsheet in the regular newspaper once a month.

HC: In your tenure as fashion editor, what do you hope to accomplish?

RE: I hope to accomplish a great fall and spring KRNL magazine that will be hard to surpass in the years to come.

HC: What has been the most rewarding about serving in this position so far?

RE: When I first started working at the Kernel, our fall fashion was in the regular newspaper, put together by advertising representatives and photographers. Now our fall and spring KRNL is published in a glossy magazine and we have a whole team solely dedicated on making it spectacular. The most rewarding part about serving in this position is seeing how far the magazine has come and how much it will grow in the future.

HC: What has been the most challenging aspect of being the KRNL’s fashion editor?

RE: When I’m hungry at The Kernel, there is only popcorn to eat.

HC: What advice do you have for students at UK thinking about getting involved with the KRNL or The Kentucky Kernel?

RE: Start now. It might take some time to move your way through the ranks, but if you are dedicated and enjoy it, you will have a great position to put on your resume.

HC: How can students learn more about the KRNL here at the university?

RE: Stop by! We are in the Grehan building, room 032. Or, you can email krnlfashion@kykernel.com if you have any questions!!

"Sam I am," and I LOVE to read. Whether it's Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" or The Mortal Instruments series, I'm always reading. And when I'm not reading, I'm writing; English papers, magazine editorials, you name it! Italian food is my favorite, shoe shopping is my addiction, and I hate cold weather. I'm also a proud member of Slytherin house (we're not all bad, I swear).
