5 Horror Films Based on True Events to Watch on Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

You won’t want to watch these alone…

Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”

We all know that vampires aren’t ACTUALLY real, but the story behind the real life Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler, is inspiration enough to unsettle your nerves. In case you couldn’t guess by his name, Vlad’s famous for impaling his prisoners alive. This movie is great for making you still fear things that go bump in the night.

“The Strangers

With events tying back to director Bryan Bertino’s childhood as well as the Manson murders, this movie is enough to make you want to lock yourself in a closet with lots of weapons. Mask-wearing psychopaths break into a couple’s summer home, terrorizing them throughout the night all because as one masked psychopath says “because you were home.” Better make sure all your doors and windows are locked after watching.

“The Conjuring

Based on true events surrounding an investigation by Lorraine and Ed Warren, this movie will definitely have you jumping out of your seat (or off the couch). If you want an “I’m never going near the basement again” fear inducing movie, watching the Warren’s paranormal investigation will do that for you. You’ll for sure want to keep the lights on after watching this.

“The Amityville Horror

When the Lutz family moves into a home that once belonged to a family who was brutally murdered, strange and terrifying events happen. Also investigated by Lorraine and Ed Warren, “The Amityville Horror” is one of those scary movies that makes you question whether those noises you hear in the house are just noises or caused by something else.

“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

We’ve all either seen or heard of Leatherface, the chainsaw wielding lunatic who is mostly seen chasing terrified victims. With his character based on real-life serial Ed Gein with an equally terrifying collection of skin masks, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is probably the number one reason as to why you wouldn’t want to go into seemingly abandoned homes alone.

After you’re done gathering as much candy as your Halloween buckets can hold, pop one of these in and enjoy the Halloween fright!
