Fighting Back Against Winter Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

When we chose to come to Appalachian State, we all knew there would be days of beautiful weather and also days we would rather just stay inside. We unofficially sign a contract agreeing that some mornings we just have to accept the -20 degree wind chill, throw on an ungodly amount of layers and brave the tundra that is Boone.

There is not a lot you can do to prepare for this weather. You can have as much cold weather gear as money can buy and the wind will still find a way to cut right through it. One thing you can control, however, is taking steps to make sure your skin doesn’t suffer.

This time of year is filled with many of our favorite things. Changing leaves, family holidays, scarves, snow and much more, but in all the excitement these months have to offer, make sure you take time to combat the cold temperatures, vicious winds, and the impact it has on fragile skin. Here, are a few simple tips and tricks that can help you form a routine that you and your skin will love!

Make your showers brief! (Easier said then done) Believe me, I want to take a hot 20 minute shower as much as the next person when it’s cold out, but the hot water can dry out your skin and strip it of natural oils. Keep them short and warm instead of steaming hot.

Right after your shortened shower, moisturize immediately!

Pat your skin dry with a towel and while your skin is still damp, lock in the moisture by moisturizing your skin. Make sure you are covering yourself head to toe, every inch of your skin is important!

PSA Not all moisturizers are created equal!

The lotion aisle can be overwhelming. There are hundreds of options and hundreds of fancy bottles trying to convince you it is the one you should buy. Don’t be fooled! Your skin needs the best moisturizer, not the best smell or coolest name. The best moisturizers you can get are over the counter at Walgreens or CVS, and they wont break the bank.

Eucerin, Cera Ve, Cetaphil and Aveeno all come highly recommended by dermatologists and everyday women alike. Also, Her Campus recommends Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Stick to moisturize on the go!

Water, Water, Water

The cold tends to make us crave warm drinks; hot chocolates, coffees and teas. These are some of my favorites too, but it is important to not forget about good ol’ water. Water is good for our entire body and is a key component of keeping our skin hydrated and healthy! Enjoy those winter drinks, but keep drinking water throughout the day!

Once a week or so treat yourself to a homemade moisturizing facemask! These can be fun to make with roommates, or just a way to relax and decompress alone from a long day. Putting moisture back into your skin that the cold air rids it of is crucial!

  • 2 Ingredient Moisturizing Avocado Mask:

            ½ Ripe Avocado

            ½ Cup of oatmeal

Cook the oatmeal as instructed on the package and mash up the avocado with a fork. Mix the two ingredients together and apply the paste to your skin. After 10 – 15 minutes wash it off with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry.

  • Egg and Honey Hydrating Face Mask

            1 Egg

            ¼ Tbsp. coconut oil

            1 Tbsp. honey

Mix together until you have a thick paste. Store in airtight container overnight. The next day apply to face and leave for 15-20 minutes then rinse with warm water.

So, to all of you facing the cold winds these next few months, keep these tips in mind when your skin starts to turn on you! Remember that your entire body works together; eating right and taking care of your skin go hand in hand as well. Make conscious decisions this winter so your skin can survive!
