That’s right; the New York Mets have advanced to the 2015 World Series! This is the first time in fifteen years that the Mets have gone to the World Series and it marks their fifth appearance in the World Series. They beat the Dodgers and therefore progressed on to the series and will be playing against the Kansas City Royals. This year makes it the 111th edition of the Major League Baseball championship series. The first game begins today, October 27.
The Mets won the World Series in 1969 against the Baltimore Orioles and won again in 1986 against the Boston Red Sox. In 1973 they went to the series as well, but lost against the Oakland A’s. They made it in 2000, but lost to the New York Yankees — their cross town rival. The Mets play at Citi-Field in Queens, whereas; the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
This season marks the 54th season of the Mets franchise. They have been in the National League since 1962 and the Eastern Division since 1969. They are owned by Fred Wilpon, who was born and raised in Brooklyn and grew up loving baseball and New York. The team’s captain David Wright is a third baseman. He was drafted by the Mets in 2001 and made his major league debut in 2004. He has the nickname of “Captain America.” He earned this nickname because he ended the 2013 World Baseball Classic with the most RBI of ANY player. Wright is a seven-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award, winner, two-time Silver Slugger Award winner and is a member of the 30-30 club. He holds the Mets franchise records for most career runs batted, doubles, total bases, runs scored, walks, sacrifice files, time on a base, extra base hits, strikeouts and hits. Long story short, he’s amazing and surely will help bring home a victory for the Mets in this World Series!
It’s an amazing accomplishment for the Mets to have made it this far and they have played such a great season. Win or lose, we know, “There is no crying in baseball!”
