Welcome to Blue Jays Off Duty, which highlights Hopkins style on campus! A play off of “models off duty”, this blog showcases students’ style when we’re “off duty.” But since that never happens, our style shown is both on- and off-duty. Every two weeks, I’ll publish my favorite looks out of all the ones that I shot over an earlier two week period (this first post will go a little further back), tell you why the outfits work, and then select an overall favorite. Don’t forget to show-off and share with your friends if you got featured, and keep your outfits sharp; maybe you’ll be next to be featured!
Poonam Gupta (2018)
Poonam’s outfit embodies the “less is more” approach. The earthy color scheme perfectly compliments the more subdued outfit, while the white flats provide a nice brightness to prevent the look from being too washed out. Her gold necklace and watch are simple touches of class.
Allie Berges (2017)
For Allie, the focal point of her outfit is the beautiful scarf that brings to mind a watercolor painting. Her dress accentuates the light green in the scarf and serves as the perfect complimentary background. With her gold accessories, necklace, bracelet and shoes, she emphasizes the warm colors in the scarf, but because they aren’t too flashy, they don’t dominate or overpower it.
Angela Wang (2019)
Angela’s outfit portrays a sense of tough femininity. Her dress is simple and girly but with the addition of a leather jacket and the knee-high boots, she adds contrast to the dress. At the same time, it’s practical yet fun. The jacket and boots allow for warmth during cool nights. Although a dress on its own wouldn’t stand against night temperatures, Angela finds a way to be warm and stylish all at once.
Giovanna Molina (2019)
A fun printed skirt matches Giovanna’s fun pose! She looks polished, keeping her palette limited to two colors, playing up the contrast between the soft and light pink and the dark navy. Her well-worn boots prevent the look from being too girly. We had been having a chilly streak, so the tights and cardigan were of course sensible but fashionable choices.
Arabiye Artola (2016)
The cold continues, but Hopkins manages to remain stylish even in the face of low temperatures. Arabiye’s floral skirt teases us with reminders of warm springs but when paired with her gray sweater and infinity scarf, it’s a lovely early fall outfit. The light gray pops against the black coat, tights, and oxford shoes, which seem quite popular among the student body. And finally, no fall outfit is complete without the requisite coffee cup!
Elysia Gao (2019)
For the few days during fall where the weather is watm, we see the dresses and skirts come out once again. Elysia’s outfit is fun and sweet. By keeping it to the two simplest colors, black and white, the emphasis is on the details of her skirt and blouse rather than letting a bright color compete with them. She also deftly navigates the fine line between scanty and appropriate with the addition of the black camisole under her blouse. The thin brown belt helps define her waist and cinches the whole look together, both metaphorically and literally.
My Pick:
Allie’s outfit is my pick! I really love her scarf and how effortlessly she makes it stand out. The look was skillfully balanced while still remaining light and airy.
