5 Reasons To Love Selena Gomez

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

With so many celebrities running amuck lately, it’s hard to find one that we can look up to.  Thankfully, Selena Gomez is still going strong as a strong female role model, even after many years in the spotlight.  Here are some of the reasons why we love Selena Gomez:

1. Positive Body Image

If you’ve been up with the celebrity gossip lately, you know that Selena has gained some weight and has been constantly shamed for it.  However, she doesn’t let the body bullies get her down.  Unfortunately, weight gain is a side effect of the medication she takes to treat her Lupus.  Despite this being out of her control, people continue to criticize her, relentlessly.  Though these comments can hurt, Selena continues to speak out against fat shaming.  She even retorted back to a mean comment on Instagram and posted a picture declaring she loves her body.  She says that she is proud of her body and embraces her new curves.  She helps us all to love our bodies and feel beautiful.

2. She’s classy

Selena has gone from her teens to adulthood in the most graceful way.  She has always been careful about portraying a sexy image in front of her younger fans.  She continues to be mindful of the entire age group of her fans.  She even stated that her film “Spring Breakers” would not be appropriate for younger girls to see.  She said at one of her concerts, “I get it all day, every day, that I’m not sexy enough. Let me tell you one thing: The sexiest thing, I think, actually I know, is class and that’s it.”  So thank you, Selena, for always keeping it classy.

3. She gives back

We all know that Selena is outrageously successful and talented, but she always finds time to give back.  She became the youngest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador ever when she was a spokesperson for the Trick or Treat campaign in 2009.  She has since then been involved with several organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation and has traveled the world to help impoverished children in many countries.

4. She loves and appreciates fans

Selena always makes sure that her fans feel appreciated.  She knows that her success as an actress and musical artist are largely due to her fan base. She uses her Instagram to reach out to her fans and makes sure they know that they are appreciated.  She even posts pictures of her and her fans!

5. She loves animals

As if her charity around the world isn’t enough, Selena also has a soft spot for animals.  She has adopted six rescue dogs from several different places and she provides them all (Baylor, Fina, Willie, Chip, Chazz, and Wallace) with a loving home, saving them from the horror of a life in a shelter.  Aww!

Siobhán is a fourth year English major at UCSB. She is originally from the Bay Area and still misses hearing "hella" on the daily. She loves the ocean, photography/ film, music, and good eats (especially burritos). In her free time, she likes to obsessively watch Netflix, watch the sunset, and experiment with new recipes in the kitchen! You can see what she is up to on her instagram @swetzelll.
Kirby is a recent graduate from UCSB currently living in Los Angeles. As a proud Her Campus UCSB alum, she's happy to be back on the HC team covering one of her fave shows: "The Mindy Project." On any given day you can find her with her nose in a book (let's be real - it's a Kindle). In her free time, she likes petting dogs, binge-watching TV, and eating a lot of food. Find her on Instagram: @kirbynicoleb or @GirlBossEats.
