Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we collegiettes are definitely thankful for a break. Especially if that break means you’re going home! But it’s not necessarily a piece of cake (or, in this case, pie) for freshmen going home for the first time. Here are seven things you’ll probably experience on your first trip back from college
1. Smiles for Miles
The best part about going home? Everyone is glad to see you! You’ll be bombarded with hugs, smiles, kisses, and maybe gifts. After a long and stressful semester, it’s nice to feel loved and appreciated.
2. Rules, Rules, Rules
But your trip home probably won’t be all hugs and kisses. Guess what? Mom won’t want you watching Netflix until 4 a.m. and Dad will prefer less eyeliner. Sometimes, it’s going to feel like your parents are grading all your life decisions and you’re not likely to ace the test.
3. A Flight for a Fight
It’s hard going from the independent college student to your parents’ little angel. You’ve living as an “adult” for a long time and then all of a sudden you’re being “babied” again. Cue the holiday cheer and disagreements. Hopefully, these familial fights don’t turn into heated arguments because we have more important things to worry about— problems like eating as much turkey as we possibly can.
4. Cleaning Up Your Act
But if we can get over one of the best parts of college— the feeling of freedom— we can enjoy some of the best parts of being home. For example, someone else doing your laundry. If you never have to see Mr. Clean again, it will be too soon.
5. Room Without Your Roomie
Another great part about being home is simply being home— like in a physical house! Maybe even in your own room. After the first months of college and dorm living, you’ve forgotten that your room was supposed to have room.
6. Four Days and Four Thousand Emotions
Being home is an emotional rollercoaster. One minute you’re up and then in the next minute you’re down, while you’re periodically stuffing your face with stuffing.
7. Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow
When the five-day break comes to an end, you’re not ready to go. Since leaving home in August, you forgot that your dad makes the best mashed potatoes. You forgot about your mom’s weird dancing. Now that you remember, it’s going to make being in college even harder. Because you love home and you know you’ll miss it.
Thankfully, college is also pretty great!
