If you’re a student photographer or a selfie queen, you know the struggle to get the perfect shot is real. Here’s an insight from the Her Campus at UC Davis staff photographer on her experiences at protests.

1. Hearing about a protest coming up, getting excited for all the photographic opportunities, and knowing you’re going to get a great shot.

2. Realizing that you’re going to miss the beginning of the protest because you have class, and now you’ll have to go running after the marchers.

3. Or, you sneak out of class so you don’t miss the beginning of all the action.

4. Seeing police officers and nervously making eye contact so they know you’re just there to take pictures.

5. Trying to get ahead of the marchers so you can get a shot from the front.

6. Hanging around even when it seems like the protest is winding down because you think there might be one more amazing shot that you could get.

7. Sliding into your next lecture about 10 minutes late because you were hanging around the protest for too long.

8. Seeing that you took over 2,000 photos and you have to go through them all and edit the best ones.

9. It’s hard to find a balance between being a student and being a photographer, but it’s all worth it when you see those shots you captured!
