An Ode to Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

Because it deserves to be the center of attention for once….

Thanksgiving is less than ten days away!

You know what that means: Endless turkey, good company, and stretchable pants.

Unfortunately, some people have decided to neglect turkey day and jump straight into the Christmas season.

I get it.

I’m just as ready as the next person to re-watch Elf for an entire month straight, and deck the malls with all of the money that should be going to my college tuition.  But come on people! Thanksgiving is a wonderful time and I will not stand to have it be treated like the Monday of Holidays. So here are a few reasons why Thanksgiving should not be forgotten:

1.) It’s the one day a year where you can have four slices of apple pie and not be questioned.

“Maybe if I get a new slice every half hour, people won’t notice…”

2.) You get to spend the entire day with your family, and hangout with relatives you haven’t seen since Easter.

Even if that means having to explain to over forty people why you aren’t in a relationship…

3.) You get to watch football while stuffing your face with turkey legs, and I don’t know what could be more American than that.

And if you live in Massachusetts, you actually get to watch your team win.

4.) It’s the best diet cheat day and you don’t have to worry about making excuses, because everybody does it!

Don’t listen to your head. Listen to your heart that beats for cheesecake.

5.) Thanksgiving leads into Black Friday, and you’ve been waiting all year for these sales. Who cares if you spend your entire paycheck?

Because you deserve nice things, and a ramen diet will definitely be sufficient for the next month.

6.) Thanksgiving is the start of the Holiday drinking season. It’s the pregame to the party that is Christmas and New Year’s … and a solid pregame should never be overlooked.

Who doesn’t love Grandpa’s stories when he’s had one too many glasses of spiked cider?

7.) You have the opportunity to dress in your holiday best, and give everyone the impression that your life is put together. As long as the outfit looks good, who cares if you can’t give an answer about your future plans?

It’s also a great chance to rack up those Insta likes.

8.) LEFTOVERS… Do I have to say more? It’s the holiday that keeps on giving.

Turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey stuffing…

9.) The best part about Thanksgiving is once it’s finally over, YOUR CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN CAN BEGIN.

We love you, Thanksgiving. You’ll always be number one in my stomach, but Christmas will always be number one in my heart.
