7 Reasons to Thank Your Hometown Best Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Going to college brings a lot of new things to your life—new living situation, new classes, new food—but one of the biggest adjustments at college is not seeing your high school friends for 7 or more hours almost every day.  Graduating high school might make you realize just how little you miss most of those people, but if you’re lucky to have a few friends you just can’t let go of, cherish them!

Don’t get me wrong, the friendships you form in college are definitely friendships that’ll last a lifetime, and there’s nothing like the closeness you get from living with your friends in college.  But there’s something about friends from back home who have known you most of your life that makes them hard to just forget about. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, here are 7 reasons to appreciate your best friends from back home:

1. They’ll always take your side.

Discussing your life with them at college is pretty much the best—they’ve most likely never met your friends here, so every piece of information they get will be completely biased by your opinion. Whatever happens, you can guarantee that they’ll always agree with you.

2. They know how weird you are.

You have absolutely no filter around your best friends and pretty much just say the first thing that comes to your mind. You’ve witnessed all the weird things they’ve done over the years and know they’ll never judge you.

3. Nothing is too personal.

These friends know every little detail of your life, no matter how weird/gross/personal. That’s what friends are for, right?

4. They’ll always be there to pick you up.

Having a bad day? A bad week? All it takes is a quick phone call with your friends back home to comfort you and leave you forgetting about all your little problems at school.

5. They get your culture shock.

What is Kroger? What’s the deal with Vineyard Vines? Why is the rest of the country not as cool as home? We’re all asking the same questions.

6. The second you see them it’s like no time has passed at all.

You’ve known these friends for so long that there’s never any adjustment period—every time you get back together you can get straight back to your old shenanigans.

7. They’ve seen you at your worst and still love you.

The longer you’ve known a person, the more times you’ve seen them ugly cry. This is just some kind of rule, right? Your longtime best friends have seen you during your awkward years, your biggest disappointments, and helped you though all your struggles. You know they’ll stick with you through everything life throws at you.

Take a little time today to love and appreciate your best friends from back home!

Hey guys! My name is Hannah Beighle and I'm a sophomore originally from Seattle, WA but am loving my new home in Breen-Phillips Hall at Notre Dame. You can find me spending all of my flex points (and my friends' flex points) at Starbucks or getting sunburned outside. I love baking, playing sports, binge-watching reality TV, and spending time with friends!
