Campus Cutie: Rose Fitzgibbons Kearsey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

Name: Rose Fitzgibbons Kearsey

Hometown: Portland, OR

Major/Minor: Digital Communication Arts/Writing

Year: 4th year Senior

Relationship Status: Single

This week’s Campus Cutie is Rose Kearsey, music-lover and Station Manager at OSU’s very own radio station, KBVR-FM.

HC at Oregon State: Why did you choose this major?

Rose: Because microbiology didn’t work out (haha) but I love studying media and how it can be applied to the technology today and in the future. Also, communication covers a wide range of topics so I’m not as specialized as other majors, which I enjoy. I’m minoring in writing because it comes naturally to me and I’ve always loved it.

HC at Oregon State: Are you involved in anyway at OSU? If yes, how so?

Rose: I’m the station manager of KBVR-FM (student leader within Orange Media Network), radio DJ (DJ Fitz), member of the MU Advisory Board, and a full-time student.

HC at Oregon State: What is your best college memory?

Rose: Last year I worked as promotions director for KBVR-FM, and we had our first off-campus event at Bombs Away Café. I got to be the host for the night while a few of our DJs spun their best playlists followed by the band Black Market Bargain. A bunch of people showed up and it was packed with KBVR DJs. It was awesome to see something that I had been planning be successful and fun. Plus, I think everyone was super happy about the DJdrink specials!

HC at Oregon State: Is there anything that you would like to do before you graduate?

Rose: Find a job in the real world (lol) but before I leave OSU I want to improve KBVR-FM in every way. There’s a lot of hard work to do, but with our incredible staff and DJ core, I know we can accomplish it. Moving from Snell Hall last year was messy, and I want all of the loose ends to be tied before I leave Corvallis. Most of all, I want to create a positive community within the DJs, and we have some exciting ideas to do just that.

HC at Oregon State: Do you have any college regrets?

Rose: Not studying abroad. If I had known my major from the jump, I probably could have squeezed it in somehow, but I just ran out of time. Good thing I have the rest of my life to travel the world!

HC at Oregon State: What would be your ideal date?

Rose: He picks me up to go get dinner (maybe Thai or sushi) then we go to a concert with music that we both enjoy. (Music taste tells me a lot about a person, so choose wisely! Haha). Then we drive back to his house or mine and watch Drunk History or a scary movie (love those!). Interesting conversation throughout the night is also very important to me, I need to connect on that level if we’re going to be dating. Plus, I love a guy that has a sarcastic sense of humor and can make me feel comfortable around him.

HC at Oregon State: Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?

Rose: I’m constantly listening to music. It’s been engrained into my life ever since I was a baby (my dad is a musician). I love going out and seeing live shows, mostly in Portland or Eugene. On the weekends, I’ll usually drive back home to spend time with my family and friends. I also watch the news religiously and try to keep up with social media (key word: try).

HC at Oregon State: Any celebrity crushes?

Rose: Rihanna is on another level. Like…how? HOW?! But besides her, Elvis is my main man.

HC at Oregon State: Do you have any pet peeves?

Rose: When someone talks over others, missing the 5:30pm national news, very loud chewing, when DJs forget to turn automation back on, and negative people in general.

HC at Oregon State: Who is at the top of your music playlist currently?

Rose: SZA is always playing in my head, I freaking love her music because it’s incredibly soulful. Also, I really love James Fauntleroy who is an amazing singer/songwriter that is pretty much running the game (I’m obsessed with his harmonization). Other than that, there are a lot of PDX bands that I enjoy like Wampire, Jackson Boone, And And And, Shy Girls, The Shivas, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra just to name a few.

HC at Oregon State: Favorite Movie?

Rose: That’s tough because I’m not really a movie person per se, but it’s a tie between Space Jam and The Godfather. Classics.

HC at Oregon State: What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

Rose: Like many other college students, I have no idea. I feel like the job I’ll have doesn’t exist yet because of how much the music industry changes based on societal/technological advances. I just hope that I’m happy and healthy. Maybe I’ll be married, but there’s definitely no rush for all of that haha. I want to be successful in my career first.

Give a shout out to Rose if you see her on campus and make sure to listen in to KBVR-FM (click here).

Katherine Borchers is a Junior at Oregon State University and is majoring in Digital Communication Arts. She is involved on campus with Res Life and So Worth Loving at Oregon State. You can find her procrastinating real life responsibilities, drinking coffee, and procrastinating some more. When she procrastinates, she loves to sing loudly (not well, either), read books, and do artsy-fartsy stuff.
