Why I Love Being in the City During the Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Growing up only 45 minutes outside of New York City, my parents and I often visited the Big Apple, so much so that we hardly considered ourselves tourists, but rather professional city dwellers.  So, it’s no wonder that I chose to go to school in a big city like Boston.  Just like I always loved strolling through NYC and seeing that lit-up tree in Rockefeller Center, I’m looking forward to seeing what festive charm Boston has to offer this winter.  Because there’s no place I’d rather be than a big city during the holiday season!

There’s Nothing Like The City Lights

I always look forward to decorating my house during the holidays with lights and glistening fixtures, so it’s no surprise that I love strolling through the city throughout the season, and seeing how the city streets sparkle from November through January. From the trees to the store window displays, big cities seem to adopt a cheerful glow during the holidays.

The City Offers Endless Holiday Window Displays

Walking down the city streets, my mom always loved to stop and gaze at all the store’s festive displays.  From the big department stores to the small, eclectic boutiques, all the shops bring out the snowflakes, the classic red and green, the ribbon, and the wreaths for the holidays. There’s no better place than a big city for window shopping, because there are endless stores to see, all inspiring the holiday spirit!

You Can Find Plenty of Festive Attractions in a Big City

In New York City, I always enjoyed walking past the the ice-skaters in Rockefeller Center on my way to see the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, where I was dazzled by the incredible Rockettes.  Just like the Big Apple, Boston has plenty of opportunities to experience the holidays, from the Nutcracker at Symphony Hall to the Holiday Light Show at Faneuil Hall, and each one is guaranteed to bring holiday cheer!  Being in a big city means you can never run out of places to go to enjoy the holidays and the beauty of winter, whether you’re seeing a show, or just walking through the park to see how the snow covers everything!

All the Holiday Sweets Are Worth a Trip to the City

While homemade holiday cookies are delicious, the city offers so many varieties of the beloved holiday sweets that we all crave during this season.  One of my favorite spots in New York City during the holidays is Magnolia Bakery, where I can get yummy limited edition holiday cupcakes in all the classic flavors.  This holiday season, I’m looking forward to taking a trip to the Ghirardelli store at Faneuil Hall, to see what joy-filled peppermint chocolates and sundaes they’re serving for the season!

These are just a few of my favorite things about spending the holidays in a big city, where the lights seem brighter, the treats seem sweeter, and the holiday spirit seems to be all around! Of course, to make this holiday season perfect, all I need is to be surrounded by my friends and family as I enjoy my favorite time of the year!
