It is an epidemic, a contagious problem that is increasing by the generation and by the fashion major. Shopping addictions, as presented in movies and television shows such as the 1995 classic, Clueless, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Gossip Girl, are major problems which are only enhanced and encouraged by advances in technology. For years, psychologists and scientists have been to answer the question, “Does playing violent video games influence and increase violence in every day life?” The same idea can be applied to these movies and TV shows; “Do they influence one’s unprecedented desire to shop?” But, do we really need to answer that? I mean, who’s complaining? The stores are happy that they’re making money and we’re happy because we get new things. There is no better feeling than when you buy a super cute new outfit and you can’t wait to show it off.
I can honestly say that my parents were relieved when I went off to college. They thought that since there is no mall super close by and I have no way to get there, I wouldn’t be shopping. But, they were wrong! In college, online shopping becomes your best friend, and every time you receive a package in the mail it’s like Christmas morning. Everyone crowds around to watch and see what new thing has arrived. After seeing what you have gotten, they becoe jealous and want to get something new for themselves. It’s a ripple effect; it is a never ending shopping addiction, and being away from home makes the symptoms no different.
1. All the stores you could ever imagine are at your finger tips.
It’s a college student’s heaven because you don’t have to leave your bed.
2. Your parents never see what you get in the mail, most of the time, they just get the bill.
What they don’t know wont hurt them. By now, we’ve all had at least 18 years of experience coming up with reasons why we absolutely NEED that new Free People dress.Â
3. That is, until you have to start paying your own bills.
We can only dream that this day never comes.
4. Online shopping is a true test to see how much can be crammed into the closet and drawers in a dorm room.
If there is room for one more hanger or one more t-shirt, you’re doing it wrong.  Â
5. Online shopping becomes a group bonding event.
It looks like a study group, if you consider intensely analyzing the newest styles that just came in on Nasty Gal studying.
6. It’s easier to find sales when you are working together as a group.
See, it’s group work. More like a group working together to increase the style and closet size of our peers. Also, there is nothing a college kid loves more than a sale or a free gift with purchase!
However, you know the problem is serious when…
7. You postpone or wake up from your nap early to take advantage of an online sale.
The only thing a college student cherishes more than sales and free stuff is their naps, and interrupting those shows true dedication.
