Living in the one of the snowiest cities in the United States is exactly as difficult as it sounds. Winters are brutal—actually the only bearable months are June-August. That being said, I have perfected the winter wardrobe that will get you through the other months of the year. Obviously, anything tartan is acceptable, but when going for warmth there is only one option: flannel. Luckily, with the style of the 90’s coming back into fashion, there are many ways to wear flannel and still look funky, or fresh… or funky-fresh.

Option 1: 90’s retro

No matter the age (take, for example, my 15 year old sister pictured here) the flannel-around-the-waist-and-graphic-tee look in and totally easy to rock. The great thing about this look is that it’s super easy to throw together and is great for when you just don’t have time to shower.

Option 2: Lumberjill

When you’re questioning whether it’s appropriate to wear your favorite crewneck for the third time this week, you can always grab your coziest flannel, throw on some wool socks, and call it a day.

Option 3: Luke 2.0

With the reboot of Gilmore Girls coming soon, you’d be lying if you said you’re not binge-watching all seven seasons and avoiding your classwork. That being said, we are digging Luke’s open-flannel look, and is great for mixing up your wardrobe.

Option 4: Classy-but-sassy

Pairing your flannel with a chic top underneath can dress up the ‘Luke’s daily outfit’ into something more dazzling. Mixing the two styles (classy and sassy, of course) can give you a subtle edge that says: you care but you don’t care…that much.

It’s easy to feel like a kid in a candy shop when looking for the perfect flannel because, let’s be real, they are all perfect. With the variety of styles (buffalo plaid vs. classic) and prices (Forever 21 vs. L.L. Bean) you will always find what you’re looking for. With winter quickly approaching, heed my advice: there’s no better way to fight cabin fever than by embracing it, and there’s no better way to embrace cabin fever than to dress for it.
