Let’s Be Ahead Of The Game: Top 5 Trends for 2016!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Where did 2015 go? It seemed just like yesterday everyone was raving about the comeback of ‘70s fashion and now here we are, about to end 2015 and go into the new year. Before we ring in 2016, it’s essential for every fashionista to make sure they know what they’re going to rock in the new year. New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week gave the public a glimpse of the trends that will dominate 2016. It’s definitely difficult to wear a runway piece to school but don’t worry, here are 5 ways you can incorporate the top 5 trends for 2016 from the runway into your schoolwear.

  1. Lingerie-inspired

Let’s break the idea that lingerie is too “sexy” to be worn in public. The runway was filled with delicate lingerie pieces that the designers changed into appropriate public attire. Most lingerie pieces are made of silk and a great way to incorporate this look is to wear something made of silk! For example, this collared top is not too revealing and has the silk material that gives that lingerie-inspired feel. Another idea is to wear a silk camisole with a lace lining under a cardigan to give that lingerie-inspired look but still keeping it comfortable and classy with a cardigan.

2. Florals, again?

If Miranda Priestly saw that florals was going to be trendy in 2016, she would’ve rolled her eyes. But, florals are a classic pattern and it’s definitely going to be a trend in 2016 once again. The floral pattern that was most prominent on the runways were neutral colored flowers with a pop of a red flowers here and there. Any floral pattern will do but that pattern was the one that seemed to be the designers’ favorite. A way to incorporate this trend is to either wear a simple blouse with the pattern or maybe step out of your comfort zone and wear pants that have the pattern! Don’t just restrict the pattern to a top or bottom, try out a pair of shoes with that pattern or even a bag.

3. Glitter? No, Sequins!

Back in the day, sequins were a fashion don’t. However, it’s now a fashion do! Sequins can be quite hard to incorporate into a school outfit because sequins are very “crazy” at times. A subtle way to wear sequins for school is to find a t-shirt that has sequins in the lettering. This might seem a little specific but these types of shirts can be found anywhere! A t-shirt can be worn with essentially anything and sequin lettering can be a great, easy way to incorporate this upcoming trend into your school wardrobe.

4. The Cold Shoulder: Off The Shoulder Tops

This trend might seem a little cold at the moment but it’ll be perfect for when the weather starts to warm up again. This trend can be seen as an extension of the ‘70s trend that’s been popping up everywhere. An off the shoulder top can give an outfit sophistication without too much effort. Scared you’ll be cold? You can just drape on a cardigan or a jacket and once you get inside, you can take that jacket off and show your top! An off the shoulder top that hugs your body can be worn with jeans or a skirt and an off the shoulder top that is more flowy and filled with ruffles can be worn as well.

5. Blue Jeans, Baby

Denim is something that all students can incorporate because it’s something that’s already in our closets! But, this time around, denim on denim is “in.” It’s completely okay to wear a denim top and bottom but you just have to make sure that they’re different colors or textures, you don’t want to look like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake back in the day (although they’re great!). Don’t be afraid to try this trend out, so many celebrities have rocked this look that no one, even those nasty fashion police people, have said anything negative about wearing denim on denim.
