Tommy B is a junior at the University of Utah. He’s currently studying Strategic Communications and is working to become a well know rapper. He is filled with talent and helps promote and open for artists such as Shwayze. He will be opening for Shwayze this Saturday, December 12, In The Venue. You can acquire tickets through Tommy or SmithTix! Her Campus Utah sat down with him to ask a few questions on how he started his music career and his future goals.
HCU: How did you become involved in music?
Tommy B: I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. The Hip Hop scene and influence really had an impact on my childhood and ever since I can remember, I’ve been telling the world I’ll make it as a rapper!
HCU: Do you write all of your own lyrics?
Tommy B: Yes, everything is written by me, but I have a great team behind me to help analyze and edit all of my material.
HCU: What is your favorite part about performing?
Tommy B: The best part of performing is feeling the connection between everyone in the room. It’s hard to connect 6 or 7 hundred people to one thing, but it’s easy to do it through music! Everyone vibes out and is friendly to each other, it’s amazing.
HCU: What does a week as Tommy B look like?
Tommy B: 7 days of writing music, 4 days of school, and parties on every Thursday and Saturday night.
HCU: How do you balance everything?
Tommy B: It’s all connected! My music is promoted through school, and everyone I meet gets to learn a little about me through my songs.
HCU: Do you think your style of music has stayed the same since you started, or has it changed?
Tommy B: It’s constantly changing as life changes, just like most artists. We go through different experiences and have to tell the world about different things!
HCU: What is your favorite song to perform?
Tommy B: Definitely “Crowd Surf.” I love seeing everyone get involved, and all the brave souls who actually stage dive.
HCU: How do you get the word out about your performances?
Tommy B: It’s all word of mouth, as the opener I have discount tickets so that usually gets people pretty hyped.
HCU: What has your favorite gig been?
Tommy B: Last year when I opened for Shwayze, which means this time is going to be even better! We are expecting a huge turn out, and another fantastic night with Shwayze.
HCU: You’re performing this Saturday; tell us a little about that.
Tommy B: I performed with Shwayze in August last year, and he puts on an amazing show. We really clicked together, and with the crowd. If you’re coming through you can expect a close up and intimate performance. This show makes everyone in the crowd seem like they have been friends for years, even though they’re complete strangers to each other. He’s definitely my favorite artist to work with.
HCU: Are you ever nervous?
Tommy B: I am nervous for this Saturday, but I don’t let it get to me. A shot of fireball (or 4) usually does the trick. This is the first performance I have ever done that will be accompanied by my little brother and live drums. I have been having a blast rehearsing with the drums but it is a bit nerve racking.
HCU: You seem very committed, what keeps you focused and positive regarding your music career?
Tommy B: Everyone I have met along the way keeps me going. I look forward to meeting new people at every show, and of course, hanging with the dedicated individuals who make it to every performance.
HCU: Where do you see yourselfin 5 years?
Tommy B: I want to be at G Eazy or Logic status!!
HCU: Anything to say to the readers?
Tommy B: Hope to see you all at Shwayze this Saturday, he and I are both really excited and ready to bring some fun to Salt Lake City. Keep reading HerCampus and “Download my mixtape, Fam”.
HCU: How can readers acquire your music on their hones and computers, are you on Itunes or Soundcloud?
