Get to know the 6’4 Michelle Lawrence as she talks about the team and what it’s like to be a National Champion.
Her Campus Cal Lutheran: What year are you?
Michelle Lawrence: I am a junior.
HC: What made you want to come to CLU?
ML: After being at Colorado State I really wanted a smaller school that felt more like a community and I really felt that at CLU. Also the volleyball team is pretty awesome if I do say so myself.
HC: What’s your favorite thing about CLU?
ML: All the great friendships I’ve made that I know will last a life time. Being able to walk around campus on a daily basis knowing you’re going to run into at least 2 or 3 of your friends is a great feeling.
HC: What are the main differences between a D1 school and a D3 school?
ML: Volleyball wise, the commitment was much more intense seeing as they were paying for my schooling, therefore, paying me to play. School wise, classes are a lot more personal and easy to follow here. Also, like I said above, the sense of community is much stronger at CLU.
HC: What’s your favorite thing about being on the volleyball team?
ML: I love all the sisters/best friends I’ve made through my time on the volleyball team. These girls will be my sisters for life.
HC: How does it feel to be a National Champion?
ML: It’s so hard to put into words. Even though it’s been a few weeks since we’ve won, it still seems unreal. It’s really amazing how much support and love we have gotten from the school and students.
HC: What is the support from fans like?
ML: The support we got this season from our fans is absolutely amazing. Their energy and ability to pump the entire crowd up was definitely part of what made us successful.
HC: What’s your favorite memory from a team bonding activity and why?
ML: All my favorite memories come from our assistant coach Judd’s adventures. Whether it be doing photo shoots or amazing races, they’re all just so much fun.
HC: What are some of your hobbies besides volleyball?
ML: I really like painting and crafting. Also, I like being active in general like going on hikes and what not.
HC: What is one thing a lot of people don’t know about you, but you think they should?
ML: Uh… I’m a pretty open book.
HC: Who is your biggest role model and why?
ML: My mom and dad are my two biggest role models. They have shown me so much love and support. They have been amazing models in how I should live my life and be the best person I can possibly be. Also, their ability to overcome obstacles throughout life has really shown me how strong someone can be.
HC: What is one word you would use to describe yourself?
ML: Tall… Just kidding probably sincere.
