Stout Hockey Snags Two Wins

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Freshman goalie Nick Schmit defends the goal proudly against Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. In his first collegiate start, Schmit saved 35 shots.

The men’s hockey team found much success this weekend and tallied two more wins at home. The Blue Devils opened up their weekend on Friday, December 11th, against the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. In the first period, Stout fell  1-0 and stayed behind until junior forward Karl Anderson tied the score in the second period. Stout came out on top in the third period adding two more goals to the score. Junior forward Tyler Cayemberg gained the lead of 2-1. Also scoring in the third period was Austin Nelson, sophomore forward. Nelson finished the Cobbers off with just 17 seconds left, leaving the Cobbers no time to respond. Freshman goalie Nick Schmit held off the Cobbers and saved 35 shots. It was Schmit’s first game starting and first credited win.

Concordia dominated the shots column outshooting Stout 36-29. Our men’s team just seemed to have a higher accuracy that night in addition to Schmit’s stellar defense. This win gave the Blue Devils plenty of momentum in Saturday’s game on December 12th.

Stout dominated the game for the first two periods and held a 3-0 lead over St. Olaf. Scoring for the Blue Devils were junior forwards Shayne McLaughlin and Nolan Kirley. McLaughlin had an awesome night and scored in both the first and second period. In the thirdSt. Olaf proved to not be done fighting and dominated the scoring for the period. St. Olaf came out determined and scored first to make the score 3-1. Junior forward Justin Moody was able to respond shortly after, increasing their lead to 4-1. In retaliation, St. Olaf was able to score the next two goals. Joe Anderson, a freshman forward, finished off the scoring for the night at 5-3. Stout really lucked out here, as they let up a ton in the third period. Thankfully, Stout was able to build a large enough lead that compensated for the first two periods.

These two wins brought Stout to 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference. Hopefully the Blue Devils will increase this two-game winning streak when they take on the Hamline Pipers in Menomonie on January 8th. Counting their game against Hamline, Stout still has seven games to fine-tune some things before conference play.

Stout only has five remaining home games of the season, so make sure to go out and show your support!
