5 Christmas Gifts People Give Way Too Often

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Christmas is a time of giving, being thankful, friends, family, and of course… presents!  We all love being able to spend time with our loved ones on Christmas but let’s face it, a bad present can put you in a bad mood, especially ones we seem to receive EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.  Do yourself favor and check out which Christmas gifts to avoid giving now and forever.

1.  Candles

Candles are the go-to gift for the person who never knows what to get anyone. Don’t let this be you this year. Break free of the candle-giving curse, you can do it.  I believe in you.

2.  Gym memberships

Are you trying to tell us something? While most of us overload on Christmas cookies, cakes, and cannolis, we do not necessarily want to receive a gym membership on Christmas morning to remind us of how many calories we will be consuming during the holiday season.

3.  Winter clothing accessories

Scarves, hats, socks, and gloves never fail to be in most stockings each Christmas. However, they usually end up getting thrown in a box to collect dust with the rest of the scarves and hats we never wear. Mittens never seem to last either because half of each pair usually gets lost anyway.

4.  Slippers & Pajamas

Although our feet need to be warm too, the amount of slippers piling up in our closets has gotten out of control.  Plus, a lot of people wear oversized T-shirts and shorts to bed so unless pajamas is a specific item on somebody’s list, please steer clear of the sleepware section of Target.

5.  Mugs

Don’t get me wrong, mugs are awesome.  In fact, they’re so awesome you probably have a whole cupboard shelf dedicated to all the mugs you’ve collected over the years.  So PLEASE stop buying people more.  They probably don’t have anymore storage space for them.

Keep these in mind when picking out gifts for friends and family this Christmas. There is nothing worse than a dreary, repeated, soon-to-be-exchanged present.  Spice up your shopping list this year and get gifts people will actually use.

Happy shopping!
