Colburn Junus: Greek Life Allstar

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

Everyone gets involved in something, but some people really go all out. Senior Colburn Junus is a great example of that, balancing his classes as a Television, Film and Media, opt: Broadcast Journalism major with heavy involvement in Cal State LA’s Greek life community. He has been a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity since Spring 2014. In almost two years time, he has become their Recruitment Chairman and the Interfraternity Council’s Vice President of Community Relations. You can also find him at the Center for Student Involvement working as Greek Life Assistant.

How did you get interested in Greek life?

I saw it as a way to branch out and explore different parts of who I was. The benefit of being Greek life was that it really pushed me to step out of my boundaries and really find or create who I wanted to be. That’s honestly one of the best perks of Greek life, that it gave me that opportunity to really explore who I was. Plus all the stuff like networking and giving back to the community but that was one of the main things.

What are some of the duties that you have as Greek Life Assistant?

In that position, I adhere to the students of Greek life. I help facilitate workshops, I help educate new members in transitioning into Greek life and helping them understand the opportunities that Greek life presents.

How is balancing your fraternity involvement with your classes?

Oh, it’s tough because it’s like another class, except it’s heavier. It’s like another family that you are just dedicated to. At the same time, it really develops a lot within myself. As in a class, there are personalities that you have to just deal with. There’s also business to take care of and how to run the fraternity and make sure everything is just working correctly. As Recruitment Chairman, it’s pretty heavy. You’re going to classes, you’ve got homework to worry about, and as Recruitment Chairman, I’m putting in the members that will be the future leaders of the fraternity. I’m the one that is setting up the structure, or the stepping stones, of how Sigma Nu is going to be like in two, three, four years.

If you could give any advice about joining Greek life, what would you say?

Greek life is honestly the best thing that happened to me. Through Greek Life I’m starting to cultivate the individual that I could be in the most successful way. If you have the opportunity to join Greek Life, do it because it’s one of the greatest things that could happen to you and really bring out the best in who you can be.
