Film Critic Posts Controversial Caption on Photo With Amy Schumer on Twitter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Amy Schumer took a photo with a young film critic at this past weekend’s Critic’s Choice Awards, who, while looking extremely cheery to have met Schumer, made a perhaps off putting comment on the photo’s caption on his twitter. Jackson Murphy, 17, is the youngest winner of the Emmy for “On Camera Talent: Commentator Editorialist.” Murphy’s caption on the photo stated “Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to say that.” Schumer quickly responded:

While Murphy was quick to apologize for the post, there has been some debate over whether his joke was meant to resonate with the comedian lightheartedly, or whether it was simply to rude to have a photo taken with Schumer and caption it as such. Schumer is known for her raunchy humor and self-referential jokes about her own sexuality – so some seem to think that Murphy was simply trying to play off of that. However, Schumer’s jokes often take a stance on femininity and the importance of women being able to make their own choices about their bodies – which perhaps Murphy mistreated.

What do you think, collegiettes?
