10 Things You Missed About VCU Over Break

Winter break is all fun, relaxation, and freedom…for the first three weeks. This winter, VCU had a break lasting at least a week longer than most schools, so as you can imagine us Rams were going a bit stir crazy by the time syllabus week came around. Here’s some things we at Her Campus VCU missed most about our school while we were home on break:

1. Richmond

Nothing will ever compare to your hometown, but after a semester in Virginia’s capitol city even the busiest of NoVa’s suburbs pales in comparison.

2. Meal plans

While you may have been elated to get away from the monotony of choosing between Shafer, Canes, or Chick-fil-a, there’s one major component that was missed about having a meal plan here: not having to spend your real money. Gimme all the swipes now, kthxbye.

3. Home basketball games

If you’ve ever been to a VCU home basketball game, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Watching games on TV with your parents may be fun, but nothing compares to being in the Stu watching our boys play. All I’m saying is, don’t start no stuff won’t be no stuff.

4. Freedom…from just about everything

If you were anything like me, you forgot chores existed while you were away at school. When you’re at VCU, the most chores you have to do is (maybe) vacuum every so often or throw away the six empty packs of Easy-Mac that have been festering away on your desk since finals started.

5. The Cary St. Gym

Most New Year’s Resolutions about “new year, new me” fall through in the first week–unless you go to a school with the largest gym on the East Coast (one more treadmill than Alabama, hollaaaaaa).

6. Structure

Sure, waking up at noon and watching Netflix until 8 p.m. and getting dressed at 9 p.m. is all fun and games for the first week, but after endless days of doing literally nothing, classes and (gasp!) homework started to sound pretty darn good to give our day some structure and a sense of purpose.

7. Walkability

Sure, being reunited with your first true love (you first car) is a sweet reunion, but then you realize that you can’t just walk down the hall to your friend’s room anymore–you actually have to DRIVE. And driving costs money. Walking does not.

8. Endless food and coffee options

Bored of Shafer? No problem, just walk down the street and you can choose from Christian’s, The Village, Elephant Thai, and much much more. If you’re from a suburb, you may not have that option when/if you get tired of home-cooked meals (like that’ll ever happen).

9. Club Cabell

If you’re anything like me, nothing gives you more purpose and direction than plopping down in a comfy chair at the library for a few hours. Now that the renovations are almost done, there might actually be a place for everyone!

10. Friends <3

Being reunited with your high school friends is the best feeling ever, but after a semester away you start to miss your new college friends. That is where you find your bridesmaids, evidently.
