The Top 5 Struggles All People With Food Allergies Relate To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

If you have a food allergy then you know how frustrating it can be.

It’s always annoying when someone tells you that you can’t do something, but it’s especially annoying when your own body tells you not to do something. Having an allergy means you are constantly nervous, annoy waiters, deal with people trying to kill you, and become a mini drug addict. Here are the four things every person with a food allergy can relate to.

Every time you kiss someone or share a drink there is always a bit of nervousness in the back of your head that makes you think, “Wow, is this about to be the end of my life?” You never know what a person’s last meal was and it would be a little strange asking someone to brush their teeth every time they try to get near you.

Another thing that most people with a food allergy can relate to is the annoyance of telling a waiter of your food allergy. Even though it’s very important to let them be aware of your allergy so they can check all the food, you always feel like a brat when you tell them. The all time worst is if they happen to forget and you have to send it back because you physically can’t eat it.

You can tell your friends and family about your allergies a million times, but somehow they will always forget. I can’t count the amount of times someone has tried to feed me something that I’m allergic to even though they are fully aware that I can’t eat it.

Finally, having a food allergy also means you develop a bit of a drug addiction to Benadryl. You are always the friend everyone comes to if they need one because they know that you are always carrying some around. No one wants to use their Epi-pen unless it’s an absolute emergency, and even then people still may choose to not use it. Of course, each reaction you have it gets worse and worse so most of us are up to taking at least four Benadryl’s with each reaction.
