Beautiful dresses, witty repartee, a rigid and oppressive marriage system…who wouldn’t want to live in a Jane Austen novel? Especially when zombies enter the mix! We can see all that craziness on the big screen with the February 5th release of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” And while we can never live in a world without iPhones or filled with walking corpses, we can still learn a thing or two from the wise words of Austen. Doubt it? Here are 10, slightly edited, things Jane Austen can teach us about college life:
#1 “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife hookup.”
Did we really need Jane Austen to tell us that?
#2 Your friends, after you get dumped: “What are men to rocks and mountains and rocky road?”
Ahhh…and we thought Charlotte Lucas was a good BFF!
#3 “Angry drunk people are not always wise.”
But they sure are funny!
#4 You to the professors who don’t know what they’re talking about: “I have not the pleasure of understanding you.”
Geeezzz, it’s like they’re speaking 19th century English.
#5 What you try to convince yourself when you have a class all the way across campus: “The distance is nothing when one has a motive.”
But one never really has a motive.
#6 When you have a Friday class before noon: “Nobody can tell what I suffer!”
Even after we’ve complained to everyone we know!
#7 Your roommate after you accidently wake them up at 4 am: “My good opinion once lost is lost forever.”
Oops, well it’s definitely lost forever.
#8 As told by your over-enthusiastic English Professor: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!”
We may not tire of a book but we probably will tire of that class!
#9 You during midterms: “The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it.”
Until after exams. Then, the world becomes wonderful again.
#10 “We are all fools in love college.”
And we’ll probably be fools out of college, too.
But, let’s be honest, we’re more likely to experience a zombie apocalypse than find a post-jerk Mr. Darcy to netflix and chill with!
