6 Misconceptions About Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD chapter.

Women and men all over the world prepare for valentine’s day not knowing they’ve been doing it wrong all these years. Here we’ll debrief the top 6 misconceptions about Valentine’s day. Thank us later.

#1 She Hopes Her Boyfriend Will Propose: Ummm no. Sorry to burst any bubbles, but getting proposed to on Valentine’s day is so…tacky. Although it’s known as the most romantic holiday of the year, popping the question on this day lacks romance in every way. Maybe a while ago this was the charming thing to do, but now it’s cliché and gimmicky.

#2 You Have to Have Sex: There’s no doubt that many women purchase new lingerie in hopes of getting the best they’ve ever had on February 14th, however, it’s not mandatory that you have sex on Valentine’s Day. Let’s not let the hype go to our heads, sex on this day will likely be the same as sex on every other day. Valentine’s Day is about love, and while many people believe that love is associated with sex, that’s not necessarily true. They’re two completely separate things, so you shouldn’t feel pressured or obligated to have sex on Valentine’s Day. Rather you’re a virgin, or you just don’t feel like it, do what you want not what you feel required to do.

#3 Valentine’s day is All About the Girl: Really, Ladies? Don’t be selfish. Yes, women are the ones known to be showered with flowers, chocolate, and jewelry on Valentine’s day, but that doesn’t mean it’s only a gal’s holiday. He may not ask for anything, but don’t show up empty handed. Don’t forget to show your guy you appreciate him & that you know this day isn’t only about you.

#4 Valentine’s Day Has to Be Celebrated with A Guy: Singles, this is for you! Repeat after me, “I do not have to have a guy to have a good Valentine’s Day.” So, in the words of Beyoncé, round up all your single ladies & put your hands up. Because honestly there’s no pressure here, just a good time. Believe me, this could be the epic girls night you need to pull you out of that potential singles slump.

#5 You Have to Celebrate Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day: you don’t need a special day to show your loved one you care. Valentine’s day Isn’t like Christmas; it can be celebrated whenever you see fit. So if you won’t be able to see your guy or gal on Valentine’s day, don’t sweat it! It certainly isn’t the end of the world. Celebrate your love for one another every day don’t wait for Valentine’s Day to do the extravagant stuff!

#6 Gifts Must Be Expensive: What matters most is the thought you chose to put into the gift. The more expensive the gift is doesn’t necessarily mean the better that gift will be. Getting expensive gifts on Valentine’s day is so typical; what’s the price if it doesn’t reflect your love for each other or your bond together. Any gift that expresses how much your guy/gal pays attention to you, or how much they know and love you is the perfect gift.

So, don’t get caught into what society has made us think are the “V-Day Norms” celebrate in the way that you see most fit. Happy V-Day, xoxo Whit
